Inside Dail’s most shocking moments from Italy soccer jersey raising eyebrows to ‘unparliamentary language’ and lapgate

IRELAND'S front pages are today dominated by the image of Michael Lowry appearing to give two fingers to fellow TD Paul Murphy in the Dail yesterday. The Dail was dramatically suspended yesterday to chants of "shame, shame, shame" after the speaking row kicked off again over a vote to change the rules in order to create a new "other members" slot. Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy repeatedly told the Opposition they were "making an absolute holy show" of themselves as they shouted down the Dail in protest at the vote. And Independent Regional TD Michael Lowry later claimed that he was telling People Before Profit's Murphy to "sit down" with his two fingers. However, the shockingly explosive row, which Taoiseach Micheal Martin branded "farcical", may not top the list of the most shocking things that have happened in the Dail. Here, we look at some of the most shocking moments that have been captured inside Dail Eireann - from a TD pulling a party colleague onto his lap to another rocking up to ministers questions in a jersey. EAMON RYAN'S N-WORD THE former Green Party leaders Dail antics — whether that’s falling asleep or growing salads on his window — were so bizarre that he became a meme on social media. But no one saw it coming when Eamon Ryan used the N-word during a debate on racism in Ireland in June 2020. Talking about an incident of racism against a young boy in Ireland, he said: "Again, in a newspaper today there was a young Irishman, Sean Gillane, giving his experience of being othered. From the age of six being given that name, ‘you n*’." There was an immediate backlash and Ryan later apologised for his actions. 'GOD IN CONTROL OF THE WEATHER' INDEPENDENT TD for Kerry, Danny Healy-Rae had his say on climate change in May 2016, telling TDs that God alone is in charge of the weather. He told the Dail he "doesn't agree with all this story about climate change at all", adding that he didn't think mankind had "any part in it at all". And Danny, who is no stranger to kicking up a fuss in the Dail, claimed that the suggestion of €3m in weather forecasting wouldn't change the weather. He added: "God above is in charge of the weather and that we here can’t do anything about it”. ROCKING UP IN A JERSEY CONTROVERSIAL Mick Wallace raised eyebrows with his choice of attire as he spoke in the Dail in January 2016. The former Independent TD for Wexford dropped his trademark pink t-shirt and wore a jersey of Torino football club while asking ministers questions. The Italian football fan later said he donned the top, which displayed a large logo of a sausage manufacturer, simply because "I am a Toro supporter". 'YOU'RE A DISGRACE' THERE was uproar in the Dail in October 2020 after Taoiseach Micheal Martin said Deputy Michael Healy-Rae was "approaching people after Mass" to offer them a seat on a bus for cross-border cataract surgery. Martin told Healy-Rae to "relax" and "calm down" as the Kerry man blasted: "You should take that back. You're a disgrace. "You're only in the bottom of the barrel now coming out with that statement. You should cop on a small bit." Michael's brother Danny Healy-Rae was also labelled a "disgrace" and a "f*****g asshole" in a separate incident that took place in the Dail in November 2024. People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy fired out the comments at the Independent TD after Danny brought up the gender of his child during a debate on the Finance Bill. UNPARLIAMENTARY LANGUAGE NO list of the Dail's most shocking moments would be complete without mention of now-Independent TD Paul Gogarty's "most unparliamentary language". During a debate on a social welfare bill in December 2019, former Labour TD Emmet Stagg questioned Green TD Paul Gogarty’s sincerity on the issue. The furious former Green TD hit back: “With all due respect, in the most -unparliamentary language, fk you -Deputy Stagg. F**k you." He immediately withdrew the remarks and apologised but the moment has been immortalised in Dail history. A landmark decision to allow abortion for the first time in certain cases was overshadowed by "sexist" behaviour in the Dail. Fine Gael TD Tom Barry was captured on Oireachtas TV pulling party colleague Aine Collins onto his lap in July 2013. The embarrassed father-of-three later admitted that it was "disrespectful" and admitted to the Irish Independent that he had been drinking in the Dail bar, "but not excessively". He said: "It should never have happened. I would be the very first one to say that. "I feel very upset that it is being described as that [sexist]. I didn't intend to offend anyone and I can't offer any excuse other than to put it down to stupidity, nativity and inexperience." DON'T EAT AND DRIVE Danny Healy Rae sparked controversy again in May 2017 after claiming that eating a big meal and getting behind the wheel of a car is as dangerous as drink-driving. The politician hit out at the Road Safety Authority as he claimed it was on a "crusade to isolate people further in rural Ireland" and objected to plans to introduce a mandatory three month driving ban for motorist caught with a blood alcohol level of 51-80mg of alcohol per 100ml. He told the Oireachtas Transport Committee: “Can I just say to you, and many people will agree with me. “If you actually eat too much and get in behind the wheel of a car, you are a danger on the road because you are liable to fall asleep after eating a big meal. “I for one, when I am going home late this evening, when I know that, I won’t eat going in behind the wheel because I know what it will do.”
