As India’s largest aluminium producer, the company is making substantial strides in aligning industrial growth with environmental responsibility.
Under the theme “Harmony with nature and sustainable development,” Vedanta Aluminium has implemented measures such as large-scale afforestation, greenbelt development, pond restoration, wildlife rescue, and community awareness programs. The company has also collaborated with PwC India to strengthen its Biodiversity Management Plans, reinforcing its commitment to achieving No Net Loss (NNL) in biodiversity conservation.
Among the notable initiatives, Vedanta Aluminium’s operations in Jharsuguda, Odisha, are driving pond restoration activities across 30 villages to enhance water quality and aquatic ecosystems. Additionally, an avenue plantation covering 1.2km on both sides of the road is being developed, alongside the renovation of two gardens to promote green spaces within the community.
At the Jamkhani coal operations in Sundargarh, Odisha, the company has introduced the Miyawaki method of afforestation, planting over 3.65 lakh native saplings across 18 hectares to create fast-growing forests. This effort will serve as a model for regenerative environmental practices in mining areas, reinforcing Vedanta Aluminium’s commitment to sustainability.
BALCO, a unit of Vedanta Aluminium in Korba, Chhattisgarh, has been instrumental in wildlife conservation, with a dedicated rescue team safely releasing over a thousand snakes and other small animals in the past year. Additionally, over 60 hectares of unoperational tailing dams have been reclaimed through native species plantations.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasised the company’s environmental vision, stating, “Our commitment to biodiversity goes beyond compliance; it is woven into the fabric of our operations. We remain focused on fostering a positive environmental legacy for future generations.”
Through its holistic approach to biodiversity conservation, Vedanta Aluminium continues to set industry benchmarks, proving that economic progress and ecological preservation can go hand in hand under its “Transforming for Good” vision.
