As the 18th season of the Indian Premier League IPL commences fans across the nation are preparing for an exciting cricketing spectacle. Ten teams are set to battle for the prestigious title with the opening match featuring the reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders taking on the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Saliva Ban Lifted The Board of Control for Cricket in India BCCI has brought back the use of saliva to maintain the shine on the cricket ball a practice banned since the outbreak of COVID-19. Despite the International Cricket Council ICC making this prohibition permanent in 2022 IPL captains have reached a consensus to reinstate it during a meeting in Mumbai. New Ball Regulation for Evening Matches In a bid to address the issue of high scores the BCCI has introduced a new rule for evening games. Umpires will now have the discretion to introduce a new ball after the 11th over of the second innings if they determine that dew significantly impacts play. This rule will not apply to matches held in the afternoon. Enhancements to the Decision Review System The Decision Review System DRS has been expanded to include height and off-side wide deliveries adding an extra layer of fairness to match officiation. However on-field umpires will remain responsible for leg-side wide calls. Impact Player Rule Despite some criticism the BCCI has decided to continue with the Impact Player rule permitting teams to utilise 12 players instead of the standard 11 potentially adding dynamism to team strategies. Fans are anticipating a thrilling season as these new developments could significantly influence the game dynamics with Indias diverse cricketing community eagerly following the action as it unfolds.
