Star India and Delhi Capitals pacer Mukesh Kumar was on Wednesday fined 10% of his match fees and handed one demerit point by BCCI for breaching the Indian Premier League’s Code of Conduct during their IPL 2025 clash against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.
The punishment followed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the Code, which pertains to the abuse of cricket equipment.
Suryakumar Yadav’s doughty 73 not out proved to be the difference as Mumbai sealed the fourth and final play-off berth with a 59-run trouncing of Delhi.
“Mukesh Kumar admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 (Abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during a Match) and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction,” the Indian Premier League said in a release.
“For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the release added.
Mukesh’s frustration came on a night when DC’s campaign unravelled and he was taken for quite a few runs in the death, to hand Mumbai a comfortable cushion.
Suryakumar’s masterclass, a 43-ball innings with seven boundaries and six sixes in adverse situations, paved the way for a dominating victory over Delhi.
DC, who came into this contest with their fair share of chances to reach the final four, saw the tables being turned on them when Mumbai batters collected 48 runs off the last two overs, with 27 of them coming off the penultimate over bowled by Mukesh.
But Delhi were guilty of a meek reply in a do-or-die contest which had their top-order blown away in the powerplay, leaving the rest of the contest a mere formality.
Chasing 181, Delhi, who were without regular captain Axar Patel in this match, rolled over for a paltry 121 in the penultimate over, with Sameer Rizvi (39) being the top scorer.
Mitchell Santner was the pick of the Mumbai bowlers, returning 4-0-11-3 and accounting for Rizvi, Vipraj Nigam (20) and Ashutosh Sharma (18). Ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah enjoyed another successful outing as he returned 3.2-0-12-3.
Delhi’s hopes suffered severe blows right at the start of the chase when stand-in captain Faf du Plessis (6) and KL Rahul (11) fell, leaving the others with a mountainous task to accomplish.
