Ireland boss: Alex Codling and Munster to decide in-demand coach's next step

The 51-year old, a former head coach with Newcastle Falcons, has since earned glowing praise from both sets of players for his input at lineout time, but juggling both roles concurrently has not been without its issues as time has gone on.
Codling was with the Irish women’s side in Cork last weekend for their Six Nations tie against England. Munster’s Champions Cup game against Bordeaux Begles started less than two hours before that in France and he obviously couldn’t be in two places at once.
As it was, Munster’s lineout coughed up nine of 21 throws at the Stade Chaban Delmas.
New Zealander Clayton McMillan will take over the top job with Munster this summer while the province’s interim head coach and head of rugby operations, Ian Costello, said this week that all appointments have been put in place without giving any details.
“Beyond the summer, that's a conversation for Codders and Munster,” said Bemand on Thursday. “We know he's in to the World Cup with us, he's been doing bits across two pieces. We've found a way to blend it and make it work.
“From our perspective we can see where the lineout was, to where we are tracking with it now, and some of the innovation he's brought to it.
“We've got a great relationship with the provinces. Alex is making it work across both groups and it's a privilege to have his input and his intel for a fast-developing group of forwards in our programme.”
Bemand will go into their fourth Six Nations tie, against Wales in Newport, on Sunday without back row Erin King who suffered a season-ending injury against England that will also keep her sidelined during the World Cup.
It’s a cruel blow for the 2024 Women’s Breakthrough Player of the Year who actually suffered the knee injury inside the opening minutes of that England game at Virgin Media Park but somehow made it through the 80 minutes.
“It's quite an unusual injury to some degree,” said Bemand. “She was like, 'well I wasn't going to stop!' She's full of bounce, she's full of grit and endeavour. She told me she's never missed a session before, so it's the first time she's had an injury.
“As we know, professional sport can sometimes deal you a hand, but she's got great people around her. People are looking after her, they will recover her, they will rehabilitate her and she's already looking at bits she can add to her game.”
The Ireland coach will have the experienced Edel McMahon back available in that back row department after she missed out on the defeat to England while centre Enya Breen is also back in the mix having missed the game against the reigning champions.
