Nineteen-year-old Carleigh Irving (48kg) showed a lot of heart and fight in her debut in the competition, but it was not to be for last year’s U23 European silver medallist as she fell short to Venezuelan veteran Tayonis Cendeno Rojas. Paris Olympian Jenny Lehane (54kg) lost a narrow decision to the 2024 Asian champion Natnicha Chongprongklang but showed a lot of skill and promise against her more experienced opponent. Two-time Olympian Michaela Walsh (58kg) was involved in one of the fights of the competition so far, losing narrowly to home boxer Andjela Brankovic on Monday evening. It was not to be for Judy Bobbett on Sunday evening but like her teammates, she gained valuable in-ring experience against a high calibre opponent. Bobbett lost a titanic battle against World medalist veteran Elif Guneri in the 81+kg division. There is consolation for the 24-year-old as she joined a select group of people who have represented Ireland in two sports. Daina Moorehouse (50kg) has a bye, and begins her tournament in the last 16 on Tuesday afternoon, against China’s 8th seeded Hu Meiyi. There’s also a last 16 start for Olympian, Gráinne Walsh as she steps between the ropes to face Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova on Tuesday evening. Khamidova is a fellow Olympian, the reigning Asian champ and medalled at the 2023 Women’s Worlds. 2022 World Champion, Lisa O’Rourke (70kg) starts at the last 16 stage against Azerbaijan’s Aynur Rzayeva – the 2016 European Women’s champion at 81+kg, the 2022 European silver medallist, and 2023 Women’s World bronze medallist. Lisa’s sister, double Olympian Aoife O’Rourke (75kg), is the top seed in her weight and she has a bye to the quarter-finals on Thursday, where she will meet the winner of the contest between Bulgaria and Uzbekistan.
