Ireland is looking to get their Women’s Six Nations show back on the road against Italy on Sunday.
Head coach Scott Bemand pledged this week that his players had heeded the lessons from their performance against France, saying that the team is ‘only going to get better’.
‘We got quite a lot wrong against France,’ he admitted. ‘We’ve higher standards and in our last 18 months we have worked hard at firing shots. We let an opportunity go. We just let them off the hook.
‘We had 14 handling errors, which is more than the French had. That is the reality of it… We are only going to get better [as the tournament continues]. We made strides this week. We have just got to keep getting better and better.’
Scott’s team selection on Friday was instructive on that front. This squad knows that they let slip a massive opportunity in Belfast in the opening round. only losing by 12 points in the end.
This week, Edel McMahon has been recalled to the starting line-up . The Exeter Chiefs flanker was named squad captain before the championship but the 31-year-old was kept in reserve last time out.
Bemand has an abundance of riches in the backrow, with Brittany Hogan, Erin King and Aoife Wafer selected in an all-action unit to face down the French.
Consider for a moment that talented Munster backrower Deirbhile Nic a Bháird can’t get a spot in the match day 23 and you get a sense of the personnel available to Scott in this department.
Edel was named among a 6-2 split on the bench, which was designed to make a big second-half impact and steer Ireland to another landmark win.
The Ireland skipper kept up her end of the bargain with a superb shift.
Her promotion is one of two changes to a starting pack that delivered such a dominant display last weekend, with Ulster lock Fiona Tuite also set to be rewarded for a big showing from the bench with a starting spot alongside her Old Belvedere teammate Ruth Campbell in the second row.
