Ireland’s youngest snowboarding star Hannah Gajewska balances winning gold medals with schoolwork

Ireland’s youngest snowboarding star has opened up about falling in love with the sport after getting her first snowboard at the age of two.
Hannah Gajewska is only eight and already has a number of gold medals under her belt - with the Olympics in her sights in the future.
She started snowboarding after getting a board for Christmas when she was only two-and-a-half, and loved it so much she hasn't been able to put it down since.
She balances her training with her schoolwork, with her travelling all over the world to snowboard. It pays off, as she has already scooped two international gold medals.
Despite the pressure of competing, Hannah told RSVP Live she never feels nervous before or during competitions.
"When you go on the competitions it's so fun," she said. When asked if she's scared performing tricks in front of so many people, she simply said: "No!"
"I like doing tricks, I like going to the snow park, I like to jump," said Hannah, explaining why snowboarding is so close to her heart. "I like all my friends that I know from snowboarding."
The family spends around 60 to 80 days a year on the snow, and despite training and competitions, Hannah still keeps up with her schoolwork.
"I do my homework on my trips and the school is very supportive," she said. "I used to be really sad because there were a lot of school events and I would always miss them because I was away training. But now we know every school trip and events that the school will have so we plan our trips around them."
Hannah's mum Kate added: "The school is super supportive; they're always happy to see her win competitions and medals. They're okay for now that we are away quite often for training. We mainly go to Poland, because that's where Hannah's grandparents live, but we also spend weeks in Italy, Austria and the Netherlands for indoor training over the summer."
Hannah and her family would love to see her at the Olympics, but at the moment she is just enjoying the sport and competitions without any pressure.
"It's not the priority," said Kate. "The main priority is that she really has fun with snowboarding and is progressing so well. She's working really hard and she's really excellent at freestyle as for her age, and might be in the international top competitors - of 8 year old girls of course. Having the skill, being fearless and working so hard so early can bring her Winter Olympic success, but she would have to work harder and travel even more as it is not possible to practice in Ireland - and she would have to be supported not only by us, her parents, but the whole team and sponsors. We'll be supporting her in whatever she wants to achieve, it’s already a great lifestyle and super skill to have, but for a gold Olympic medal a lot more should be done."
Hannah is certainly a busy bee, as aside from snowboarding and school, the rest of her schedule is packed full of other hobbies.
"I play the violin," she said. "On Fridays I have violin lessons, and on Saturdays I have a music thing called Musicianship. I also do choir and gymnastics."
