@Source: walesonline.co.uk
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is under way with Chelsea set to kick off their campaign in the United States against MLS side Los Angeles FC on Monday evening. The tournament has been contested every year since 2005, but this year has marked a huge format change which will see it held every four years from now on. The number of teams has also been greatly expanded, moving from seven teams to 32 as FIFA looks to rival the UEFA Champions League and establish the tournament as the world's most successful club competition. As the winners of the Champions League in 2021, Chelsea are one of two Premier League representatives at the tournament, with 2023 European champions Manchester City also involved. Enzo Maresca's side will face three teams - LAFC, Brazilian side Flamengo and Tunisian champions Tunis - in a round-robin style group stage as they look to make it through to the knockout rounds and all the way to the final on July 13. As they get ready to begin their Club World Cup campaign, here's everything you need to know about the Blues' opening match and how you can watch them in action. Chelsea v Los Angeles FC kicks off at 8pm UK time tonight - Monday, June 16. The match will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. It is one of three Club World Cup games held on Monday, with Botafogo beating Seattle Sounders 2-1 earlier in the day and Boca Juniors set to do battle with Benfica later tonight. Like all of the games at the Club World Cup, Chelsea v LAFC is being streamed live on DAZN, which is free to sign up for. However, the Blues' opening match of the tournament is also one of the 23 matches being shown live on Channel 5 over the course of the month-long competition. Channel 5's coverage begins at 7pm UK time on Monday evening. The broadcaster will also show Chelsea's meeting with Tunis on June 25, as well as Manchester City's clashes with Wydad and Al Ain. It has also secured the rights to show live coverage of four Round of 16 matches as well as two quarter-finals, a semi-final and the final. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca made some bold calls when selecting his Club World Cup squad, leaving some big names at home while bringing some new signings with him. The likes of Joao Felix, Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Djordje Petrovic and Axel Disasi were all left out by the Blues boss, while a hamstring injury ruled defender Wesley Fofana out of contention. New signings like Liam Delap and Dario Essugo are set to feature for the first time, while the highly-rated Andrey Santos is set to play his first competitive minutes for Maresca's side. Other new acquisitions like goalkeeper Mike Penders and defender Mamadou Sarr are also included in the squad. LAFC, meanwhile, have some faces that will be familiar to Premier League fans, with ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris between the sticks and veteran striker Oliver Giroud - who played 75 times for Chelsea after spending six years with Arsenal - likely to feature from the bench.
