The Club World Cup trophy will be up for grabs this weekend (Picture: Getty) The Club World Cup has reached the semi-final stage, with the four remaining teams now just two games away from being able to call themselves Champions of the World. The first semi-final will see Chelsea play Brazilian side Fluminense in New Jersey on Tuesday night, with the winners returning to the MetLife Stadium for the final on Sunday. The second semi-final between European heavyweights PSG and Real Madrid will take place on Wednesday evening. And while the two victors will progress to Sunday’s showpiece, what will become of the losers? Find out if they will be heading to a dreaded third place play-off. Is there a third place play-off at the Club World Cup? No, there is not a third-place play-off at the Club World Cup 2025. Chelsea are just two games away from glory (Picture: Getty) Given concerns over player welfare and the added demands of an expanded Club World Cup, it is perhaps no surprise that FIFA decided to do without a third place play-off for this tournament. After the semi-final stage, the competition will therefore just finish with the final on Sunday. The World Cup, which takes place in the US, Canada and Mexico next year, will feature a third place play-off. Have any of the semi-finalists won the Club World Cup before? Both Chelsea and Real Madrid have won the Club World Cup in its previous, slim-downed format. Chelsea’s only triumph in the competition came in 2021, with the Blues beating Palmeiras 2-1 in Abu Dhabi. Real Madrid, meanwhile, have won the Club World Cup on five occasions; 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2022. European Champions PSG have never won the competition, whilst Fluminense’s best result in the Club World Cup saw them finish as runners-up to Manchester City in 2023.
