‘It gets blown up towards Rory’ – three-time major champion aims cheeky dig at Rory McIlroy ahead of the 2025 Masters

THREE-TIME major winner Jordan Spieth has played down the difficulty of Augusta National ahead of the 2025 Masters. The opening major of the season gets underway on April 10 at the famous track in Augusta, Georgia. And the American golfer, who won the coveted green jacket in 2015, suggested that the significance of the Masters is often overstated - particularly when it comes to Rory McIlroy. Speaking to GOLF, Texan Spieth noted that Augusta receives more attention than it perhaps deserves. And especially in the build-up to Rory McIlroy’s annual bid to complete the career Grand Slam. “It’s just blown up more than it probably should be. “In that sense, it gets blown up towards Rory. Majors are majors. Augusta's — you know, if you look at the field, it's technically the easiest major to win. "So the more I think someone focuses on that, the better.” He highlighted the fact that the Masters field is the only major played annually on the same course. The Ryder Cup star also pointed out that it can be more forgiving than other majors, something he believes works in players’ favour even when they aren’t at their best. Spieth reflected on his own past performances at Augusta, admitting he’s found himself in contention there despite not being in top form. He said: “I've contended there when I've had next to nothing, and there's no real reason for that. "It's not like I love that place or not. If I didn't have anything, your driving accuracy is less of a problem there than it is at other majors, except maybe the Open. "But other than that, I think it was just because the field wasn't the same as some of the other harder events. But that’s a hot take.” Meanwhile, McIlroy arrives at Augusta in excellent form, having already won twice on the PGA Tour in 2025. The Holywood hotshot claimed the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and followed that up by defeating J.J. Spaun in a playoff at TPC Sawgrass last week to win a second Players Championship title. He will once again attempt to secure the elusive green jacket and complete the Grand Slam, which is the only major title missing from his collection.
