ITV Dancing On Ice faces axe as staff 'told show won't be returning'

ITV's Dancing On Ice aired its season finale last night (March 9th), seeing Sam Ashton take home the trophy, but he could be the last to do so as the future of the competition is in doubt. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that ice skating legends Jayne Torvill, 67, and Christopher Dean, 66, would be retiring after their farewell tour, with the duo performing on the series for the last time during the final. Now reports have surfaced that the show is getting the axe, with staff being told it "won't be returning." It’s a mainstay of ITV’s schedule, and viewing figures are remarkably less than they were, but they still had almost three million watch the launch show." The source added that the format has become "tired" and the programme will likely be "rested and given new life," adding: "Staff working on it aren't holding out much hope." A source told Mirror earlier in March: “There are very real fears this is the end of the road for Dancing on Ice . It’s had a good run for nearly 20 years and has a very loyal set of viewers who really love it, but the sad truth is there’s just not enough of them. We need bums on seats but the ratings have dropped to a point where it’s difficult to justify the cost.” It comes as Torvill and Dean said goodbye to both the series and their 50-year-long skating career, as they took to the ice for the last time during the finale. In a pre-recorded interview, Chris said: "It's very emotional. We wanted to include as much of the professionals as we could. Going out there for our last performance, it's our Olympics again. We just want it to be perfect. We are retiring our skating now and it's just fitting we are able to do a final performance on Dancing On Ice." Jayne added: "When we were asked to do Dancing On Ice, it was to choreograph, we had actually retired and we were asked to demonstrated some of the technical moves with music and we thought 'um, that would be a routine'. There we go, we were back performing again." "We were doing performances every week and we loved it," Chris continued. Jaybe concluded: "As we've been skating together for 50 years and this is our final performance on Dancing On Ice, we wanted to do something really special."
