ITV ridiculed after giving iconic 70s comedy trigger warning – claiming its classic humour may offend

ITV slapped 1970s comedy George & Mildred with a woke warning — saying its classic humour may offend.
The broadcaster was last night ridiculed for the latest example of over-protecting sensitive viewers.
In one 1978 episode hit with a notice on streaming platform ITVX, Mildred, played by Yootha Joyce, tries to get their dog Truffles to mate.
The long-suffering housewife wanted it to have “everything in life that I’ve never had”.
Later in a vet’s waiting room, her downtrodden husband George, played by Brian Murphy, discusses their dog’s lack of interest in sex.
To which his wife replies: “You don’t have to describe it to me.”
George then says they should have brought Truffles with them.
Mildred says it would have had to fight off the large Irish wolfhound on the floor next to them.
And much to her delight, its owner strokes the dog and says: “Oh no, he’s well past that, aren’t you George?”
ITVX’s warning that it contains “classic British humour from a bygone era” was met with disbelief.
Free Speech Union founder Toby Young fumed: “George and Mildred? Really? What’s next?
“The Magic Roundabout on the grounds that viewers with hyperactivity disorder may find the character of Zebedee triggering?”
George & Mildred, which ran from 1976 to 1979, was watched by up to 18million viewers.
Yootha died in 1980 aged 53 while Brian passed away last month at 92.
The same bygone era warning also appears on multiple episodes of Carry On star Sid James’ sitcom Bless This House.
ITV was previously criticised for warning that Midsomer Murders contained “witchcraft”.
ITVX was asked to comment.
