Jack O’Connor is set to return as Kerry boss for two more years with a sixth All-Ireland senior title firmly in his crosshairs. If O’Connor, who turns 65 in October, lands another Sam Maguire he will go level with Jim Gavin and just two behind Mick O’Dwyer in the all-time rankings. After Kerry’s All-Ireland Final victory over Donegal at the end of July, O’Connor suggested it was the end of the road for him after winning two All-Irelands in four years in his third term as manager. But with the new rules appearing to suit Kerry and the Clifford brothers looking nearly unmarkable in the new game, the prospect of more silverware has proved too tempting for the Dromid Pearses man to pass over. If the Cliffords stay fit Kerry look set for a golden era, after winning just one All-Ireland in 12 years, between 2010 and 2021. The Kingdom landed this year’s All-Ireland title with comfortable wins over Armagh, Tyrone and Donegal, although they did trail Armagh by five points at one stage early in the second half before blowing them away and winning, pulling up with Paudie Clifford coming on at half-time. And Kerry did it without three of their regular starters in Tom O’Sullivan, Paul Geaney and Diarmuid O’Connor. Other sides will develop new gameplans to try and stop the Cliffords, but right now O’Connor and Kerry are in pole position to go back to back. There is no team like the Dublin five-in-a-row side around and no-one has three forwards of the quality of the Cliffords and Sean O’Shea. Saying all that, O’Connor’s role shouldn’t be underestimated. He is a wily operator who not only recruits well in his backroom teams, but has a knack of coming up with the right team selections, gameplans and tactics on the big day.
