Tokyo eyes subsidies to ease trade tensions with Washington
TOKYO – Japan is considering offering subsidies for Tesla electric vehicle (EV) charging stations as part of its strategy in ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States, Japanese broadcaster TBS reported on Saturday.
Currently, Japan only provides financial support for charging stations using the domestic “CHAdeMO” standard. However, Tesla’s proprietary “Supercharger” network has been left out of the program, raising concerns from the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), according to the report.
In response, Tokyo is reportedly preparing to address these concerns during a planned third round of trade talks with Washington next week. Japan’s top trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, is expected to travel to the U.S. to continue discussions.
Meanwhile, the Nikkei business daily reported that Japan may consider reducing some U.S. tariffs rather than pushing for their complete elimination. These tariffs currently include 25% on automobiles and auto parts, a major concern for Japan’s export-driven economy.
Despite this softening stance, Akazawa has consistently emphasized Japan’s ultimate goal — full removal of the U.S. tariffs on Japanese vehicles and parts. He noted that the auto sector remains a top priority due to its impact on trade and jobs.
This potential subsidy move signals Tokyo’s willingness to compromise and support broader EV adoption, while also improving relations with the U.S. and promoting fair competition for American companies operating in Japan.
