Indian pace superstar Jasprit Bumrah is all excited for cricket’s return and first appearance in the Olympics after a century in 2028. He said he was ‘looking forward to’ the event and because not many expected cricket to become an Olympic sport, the prospect of playing in the Games makes him quite excited.
Bumrah was speaking in an interview with former Australia cricketer Michael Clarke on his Beyond23 Cricket Podcast on YouTube. He was asked about managing his workload and playing all three formats and steered the conversation to the Olympics, suggesting he’d try to contain his excitement and stay in the present.
“I’ve heard there’s Olympics in cricket coming as well,” Bumrah said. “So that is something that I’m looking forward to. Who would have thought cricket would become an Olympic sport? So yeah, that is something that is really exciting me, and I’m looking forward to that whenever we get an opportunity. So all these things do play a role in the back of your mind. But I don’t set goals because whenever I’ve set goals, I’ve never been able to fulfill them. So I just try and enjoy because this is why I started this sport. [I am going to] take one day at a time and collect memories because at the end of the sport, that’s all I’ll remember.”
The last time Cricket featured in the Olympics was 1900. This year, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and other bodies have put in the effort towards the bid for Los Angeles, where venues are still being put up.
Six teams are expected to feature in each of the men’s and women’s categories, with each designating a squad of 15 players, resulting in 90 cricketers participating in each category at the Olympics.
The qualification criteria for the cricket tournament at the 2028 Games have yet to be confirmed. However, the USA, as the host nation, is likely to secure a direct spot at the quadrennial event, leaving only five teams to qualify through the qualification process.
Meanwhile, Bumrah will feature in the IPL 2025 Eliminator against Gujarat Titans at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur on Friday (May 30).
