The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and International Cricket Council (ICC) chair Jay Shah celebrated Olympic Day, June 23, by urging progress towards bringing the Games to India. Using their respective social media handles, they also promoted the ‘Let’s Move +1 India’ campaign by the International Olympic Committee in collaboration with the Abhinav Bindra Foundation and Reliance Foundation. After initially expressing interest in hosting the 2032 Summer Olympics, India has made an official bid for the 2036 edition with Ahmedabad being a potential host city. It’ll face tough competition from Poland, Indonesia, South Africa, Qatar, Hungary, Turkiye, Mexico and Egypt, who are also in the race. Cricket will be part of the Games from the 2028 edition in Los Angeles, making its first appearance in over a century. “Cricket has always united us, and now, it’s part of the Olympic movement!” Shah wrote on X. “On this #OlympicDay, let’s celebrate the power of sport to inspire, connect, and uplift. Invite your +1 for a walk, a run, or a game of cricket, and take a step towards a stronger, healthier India. Together, let’s keep moving forward on our journey to bring the Olympic Games home!” he added. The BCCI also posted from its Instagram account, saying, “Cricket has joined the Olympic movement- a historic leap for our beloved sport! ? This #OlympicDay, let’s celebrate the power of sports to connect and inspire. Through the #LetsMove campaign, we invite you to pick your +1 and move – whether it’s a walk, a run, or a game of cricket. Together, we can build a healthier, more united India, because when we move together, we move better. Let’s make our dream a reality – Olympics in India!??” The Olympic Day is an IOC initiative celebrated annually on 23 June to commemorate the inception of the modern Olympic Games. This day is dedicated to honoring sports, fitness, and the spirit of peace and unity. It also serves as a reminder of the Olympics’ revival after halts due to World War II in 1940 and 1944. It was first celebrated on 23 June 1948, 54 years after the IOC was founded in Paris by Pierre de Coubertin.
