Jennifer Lopez has long been recognised as a formidable triple threat, yet admirers of her musical career might have overlooked her latest romantic film role amid all the buzz surrounding her personal life.
Marry Me, released in 2022, sees the 55-year-old take on a character remarkably similar to her real-life persona - pop sensation Kat Valdez, who becomes entangled in the most extraordinary of circumstances. The megastar had arranged to wed her longtime beau in a spectacular live ceremony before her devoted fanbase, only to discover moments before the vows that he's been unfaithful throughout their relationship.
Onstage, Kat experiences a complete breakdown, and in a moment of pure madness, catches sight of an everyday maths teacher, Charlie Gilbert, portrayed by Owen Wilson, who happens to be brandishing a placard reading "marry me". Driven by a combination of lunacy and sudden inspiration, she accepts his impromptu proposal, leaving the mismatched newlyweds to navigate whether their completely different worlds can somehow merge into one.
One viewer shared their thoughts on Rotten Tomatoes, writing: "If you love 'rom coms' and all the cheese that those stories entail, then chances are you will love this movie. If those types of storytelling tropes drive you crazy, this isn't going to be the movie to win you over to their side. Although nothing original, I did enjoy good portions of it. Owen Wilson and Jennifer Lopez have good chemistry."
Another review gushed: "Marry Me is comprised of pure feel-good movie magic. The cast is amazing, the story is endearing as can be, and the characters immediately win your heart. Marry Me is a perfect getaway.", reports the Express.
The film's journey began back in 2019 when it was announced as an adaptation of Bobby Crosby's graphic novel of the same name. Principal photography took place in Manhattan that year, though the movie wouldn't reach audiences until 2022 following several postponements.
Despite a lukewarm box office performance, Marry Me found its stride as one of Peacock's most-watched titles upon its streaming debut. J-Lo enthusiasts were particularly thrilled with the film's original soundtrack, which became a standout element in its own right.
One admirer commented: "Marry Me It's a great romance and musical film, a beautiful story with lots of good and catchy music that involves its characters very well."
Another viewer highlighted their appreciation for the musical elements, noting: "Amazing romcom with a different view, something that I haven't really seen before. The music is good too."
Lopez released the soundtrack as a standalone album, with its lead track, Pa Ti, climbing into the top ten of Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart. Additionally, another track from the picture, On My Way, secured the Best Song accolade at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.
Jennifer Lopez is no stranger to films centred around nuptials, having starred in the 2022 romp Shotgun Wedding and the beloved 2001 hit, The Wedding Planner. Despite her iconic status, her portrayal of Kat in Marry Me has been met with mixed reviews.
One viewer didn't mince words, saying: "Bad acting, bad songs. I was laughing at it, not with it."
Another added their two cents: "Me and my wife love rom-coms and watch them all the time; this movie had maybe three mildly funny lines, and the story progression made absolutely zero sense. Genuinely one of the worst movies I think I've ever seen."
For those who can't get enough of J-Lo, the good news is that Marry Me is now available for free streaming on BBC iPlayer starting July 11.
