This is sadly the case for actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, who was one of many displaced from her home with her husband Brian Hallisay and their three children earlier this year. For anyone coming of age in the nineties, Hewitt’s pop culture prominence peaked following iconic roles in Party of Five, I Know What You Did Last Summer and the teen-classic, Can’t Hardly Wait. But her acting career has continued to thrive in the years since. Hence she and her family (with actor Brian Hallisay) lived locally as the geological disaster unfolded this January. “To be honest, celebrating feels hard at the moment,” Hewitt admits to Forbes.com of the upcoming love-themed holiday, Valentine’s Day. “But my little loves deserve all the magic and joy. So, I have made them ‘love baskets’ with toys and treats inside, and I have some ideas up my sleeve for Valentine’s Day,” Hewitt explains. One such treat will that they partake in will undoubtedly be fan-favorite chocolates from Ferrero Rocher, with whom she has partnered to celebrate her love of hosting and gathering with loved ones. “We usually do a special Valentine’s Day breakfast all together and then eat [heart-shaped] pizzas for dinner,” she says, adding that she and her husband try to have a special lunch to celebrate as a couple. While she notes that she prefers gifting others as opposed to receiving gifts, her preferred treats definitely fall into the “thoughtful” and “quality time” categories. “A love note or special time spent [together] is the best. I have always wanted to wake up in a room filled with balloons and drink coffee in bed,” she muses. “When my husband and I were still dating, I came home from a long day and he had candles, a glass of wine and a piece of art waiting for me with red lips all over it. It’s still one of my favorite gifts ever.” Chocolate-lover Jennifer Love Hewitt partners with Ferrero Rocher. Ferrero Rocher Noting that she is a “chocolate lover,” she admits that she also enjoys having a sweet treat on Valentine’s Day. She considers the popular confections to be great, versatile gifts for kids, teachers, colleagues and friends. Thinking back on her past memories of the holiday, she fondly remembers delivering valentines at school and excitedly looking through them upon getting home. “It’s so fun seeing my kids exchange Valentine’s now and how special they feel [doing it],” Hewitt says. Part of Hewitt’s affinity for the holiday is rooted in her love of family and motherhood. Explaining that she has “really stepped into who I am since becoming a mother,” she attributes much of her own ability to navigate the stress of fame and to withstand career-driven pressures (Hewitt has spoken in the past about the pressure to be sexualized in Hollywood) to her late mother’s example. “One minute I was on the cover of a magazine in a bra and the next [being] a total dork at home in baggy sweats. Both can exist,” she recalls. “But my mom always taught me to just be myself. She really helped me tune out the noise—to be in my own body, to let external pressure wash through me but not define me,” she says. When she was younger, it was her mother that gave her the strength to “stay true to who you are and what makes you comfortable.” In time, as she internalized her mother’s example as her own, her reverence for it shows in her resolute dedication to parenting her own children. “Something happens as we get older. I feel more comfortable in my skin than ever before. I have a responsibility to be an example for my daughter and role model for my sons,” Hewitt adds. Noting that this includes “being kind to herself,” she lists a few favorite pastimes like bubble baths, skincare products and the occasional micro-needling session. It is often said that you cannot pour from an empty cup—and this is especially true when facing devastating losses like the one faced by the Los Angeles community. Yet Hewitt’s strength is clearly derived from the shared bond with her family unit. This, and the sanctity of motherhood, is exactly what she will be celebrating this Valentine’s Day.
