Jofra Archer Makes Comeback Into England Squad For Edgbaston Test Vs India
@Source: news18.com
Star England pacer Jofra Archer was on Thursday named in England’s squad for the upcoming Edgbaston Test against India, where they would look to go 2-0 up in the five-match series, having won the first Test at Headingley on Tuesday by five wickets, chasing down a whopping 371 with ease.
Archer returns to the England Test setup for the first time since February 2021 and will be looking to add to his 13 Test caps at Edgbaston on July 2.
Archer’s return to action this summer was delayed by an injured right thumb that he sustained during the Indian Premier League while playing for the Rajasthan Royals.
The inclusion of Archer is the sole change made by the selectors after England took a 1-0 lead in the series with a five-wicket win against India.
Archer, who made his first appearance in red-ball cricket since May 2021 when picked for Sussex’s game at Durham in the last round of the County Championship, joins a group of six pacers vying to play in the second Test.
With Josh Tongue and Brydon Carse proving themselves in Headingley, England will need to drop Chris Woakes to play Archer. Or, they might go with an all-pace attack with Archer replacing Shoaib Bashir, and Joe Root as the part-time spinner.
The second and third Tests, at Edgbaston and the Lord’s, will be played consecutively, and England might well look to rotate their attack.
Tongue was England’s most successful bowler at Headingley, with match figures of 7/158, while skipper Stokes took five and Carse four.
Archer hasn’t been involved with the Test setup since the 2021 tour of India, with the last of his 13 caps coming in Ahmedabad.
After a long break due to injury, Archer has since returned to regular white-ball action and made a long-awaited first-class return at Chester-Le-Street at the weekend, bowling 18 overs and taking 1/32 as Sussex drew with Durham.
England Men’s Test squad: Ben Stokes (capt), Jofra Archer, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes
