John Swinney warns 'history will judge harshly' as he condemns Israel attacks on Gaza

John Swinney has condemned Israel for renewing attacks in Gaza and for restricting vital aid to the region.
The First Minister is now calling for ‘an immediate and sustained ceasefire’ as he welcomed the statement from the UK, France and Canada yesterday.
Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron and Mark Carney also called for a halt to the attacks from Israel in a joint statement.
Now Mr Swinney wants the international community to take action to ensure the necessary steps are taken to deliver peace for everyone in the region.
And he warned that history will be a harsh judge on those who continue to prevent humanitarian aid reach those who need it.

He said: “I welcome calls from the UK, France, Canada and many other countries condemning Israel’s intensified military operation in Gaza and blocking access for humanitarian aid. Israel’s actions and rhetoric are deeply troubling.
“The Scottish Government has been consistent and forthright in calling for an immediate and sustained ceasefire, release of hostages, unimpeded access for humanitarian aid, compliance with international court rulings, and an end to licenced arms exports to Israel. And of course, a two-state solution, recognising the state of Palestine, so Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace alongside each other.
“History will judge harshly those who prevent food and medicine reaching those most in need. The international community must exert resolute pressure on Israel to bring an end to this tragedy and ensure lasting peace in the region.”
