Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau confident for the Masters despite LIV Golf woes
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Joaquin Niemann will all be competing to become just the third LIV star to win a Major at the Masters next week. Brooks Koepka at the 2023 US PGA and DeChambeau at last year’s US Open are the only members of the Saudi-backed league to triumph in the biggest events since LIV was launched in 2022 But 12 stars – including seven past Masters champions – will tee up in LIV Miami on Friday in their final preparation for Augusta. Including this weekend on Donald Trump ’s Doral Blue Monster, LIV stars will only play five 54-hole tournaments to prepare for the Masters. And defending champion Scottie Scheffler is the favourite next ahead of world No.2 Rory McIlroy . But 2023 champion Rahm, last year’s LIV individual champion, insisted he is in form despite a sore elbow and no wins this season. “I'm feeling good – I think I'm very close, especially the last few weeks,” said the Spaniard. “Obviously Augusta is a whole different level and so is the Blue Monster, but that's why I like this week. It's such a good prep for a Major coming up. “But either way, I'm always just absolutely blindly confident in my abilities. I think all of us up here, every time we tee it up, we think we're going to win, and that's why they have accomplished a lot of what they have and everything that they have.” DeChambeau famously claimed in 2020 that par-72 Augusta National was a par-67 for him because of his power hitting but had never finished in the top 20 before last year. The American shot an opening 65 and still shared the halfway lead last year before then finishing runner-up at the US PGA and beating McIlroy to the US Open title. “To be honest, last year I was just having fun,” said DeChambeau. “Was I feeling pressure? Yeah. Was I doing it for all of LIV? Sure, you can say that. For me, I'm just out there trying to win a golf tournament, and if that does great for LIV, then that's awesome. I love that.” Niemann’s hot form this season – his two LIV wins saw him earn an invite to the Masters – led Phil Mickelson to claim the Chilean is currently the best player in the world . But his best Major performance is 16th at the 2023 Masters. “I still haven't had any pretty good results in Majors,” Niemann admitted. “I feel like I've improved a lot. I've still got to test myself on those stages. I'm still figuring it out.” Off the course, LIV has a new US TV deal and a new slogan: “Long LIV Golf.” But five-time Major champion Koepka said: “I think we all hoped it would have been a little bit further along, and that’s no secret. “No matter where you’re at, you always hope everything is further along. But they’re making progress and it seems to be going in the right direction.”
