Jonah Ayunga set for Europe mission as St Mirren target quickfire return

Jonah Ayunga insists his Buddies believe they can go on another Euro adventure. St Mirren were today facing up to their biggest week of the season — with fifth place up for grabs following a stunning 2-0 Premiership win at Dundee United on Saturday. Kenyan international Ayunga added to Mikael Mandron’s eighth goal of the season as Saints starred on Tayside. The Paisley outfit are breathing down United’s necks — two points behind with a better goal difference — with only two games of the campaign remaining. Saints ended a 37-year Euro wait last term and could notch up back-to-back UEFA Conference League campaigns if they can maintain their form. And Ayunga knows what is at stake with Hibernian at the SMiSA on Wednesday night followed by champions Celtic in Glasgow’s east end next Saturday. The 27-year-old striker — who netted his third goal of the season at Tannadice — said: “It was a very complete performance. I thought we created chances throughout the whole game and didn’t really look like conceding. “I had the early chance that the keeper [Jack Walton] saved then one on the left foot but I kept going and managed to score one. This keeps it alive. It is still against the odds but we will play Hibs and try to get another three points. “There is a belief in the squad that we can get it. No one fancies us but we will keep pushing. I think that’s the highest points total we’ve got in the last three years. We’re pushing on and improving every year. “To be able to go into the Hibs game with a chance of Europe is massive. We will be going for the win and we need to really. We’ve made the top six so the pressure is off. The only pressure is on ourselves and how well we can do. “We’ve had a taste for Europe in those few games and, although we didn’t get through in the end, it was very enjoyable.” A black-and-white army in excess of 1,600 were euphoric at time up — Ayunga isn’t surprised by their vocal support or where Saints currently find themselves. “You saw how many of the fans have travelled and that’s been consistent in my time here,” he said. “We’ve always got that energy and support whether we’ve been losing early in the cups or going to Europe. “We’re not surprised with where we are but it’s been a weird season as we’ve not hit that consistent form. We’re hitting it now. We’ve been getting good results and are pushing on at the right point.” Ayunga feels his partnership with Mandron is beginning to blossom and added: “We felt good. We’re playing more games together and getting a relationship. I think you can see that.” Don't miss the latest Renfrewshire headlines – you can sign up to our free daily newsletter here
