Jordan Chiles Reveals Her Plan If She Doesn’t Get Her Olympic Medal Back
@Source: people.com
Jordan Chiles is focusing on herself. During an appearance on Good Morning America to promote her new memoir, I'm That Girl: Living the Power of my Dreams, on Tuesday, March 4, Chiles, 23, said she's focusing on her mental health as her legal team continues to fight the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)'s decision to strip her of the bronze medal she had earned during the Paris Summer Olympics. "I can tell you I’m doing way better than I was when it first happened," Chiles said on the morning show. "I definitely can only do so much for myself is really focus on my mental and really knowing that I’ve been at UCLA and really competing with the team has really helped with that." Chiles, who also won a gold medal with Team USA in Paris, continued, "I’m going to continue to fight and understand that I can only control what I can do with myself and let everything else just be on the back end of whether my lawyer, my attorney are continuing to do whatever they can to fight for that." GMA host Michael Strahan then asked Chiles if she has a plan for the scenario in which she is not re-awarded her medal. "I mean, I'm just gonna continue on to move with life," Chiles replied. "Again, I can’t control what happens at the end of the day. I just know what’s right with me and that I’m always going to continue to look forward," she added. Chiles had made history in Paris as part of the first all-Black Olympic gymnastics podium when she stood proudly alongside Brazil’s gold medalist Rebeca Andrade and her silver-medalist USA teammate Simone Biles. During the Aug. 5 individual floor exercise competition, where Chiles initially finished in fifth place, her coach filed an appeal, citing a scoring error. As a result, she was bumped up to third place. On Aug. 11, Chiles was ordered to forfeit her bronze medal after an appeal by Romanian gymnasts claimed that Chiles' coach appealed four seconds too late in an attempt to correct her score. In September, Chiles’ attorneys filed an appeal on her behalf with the Federal Court of Switzerland to overturn the decision made by CAS. Chiles spoke to PEOPLE ahead of the release of her memoir, revealing that winning an "individual medal" is something she continues to strive for. "But I know myself, and I know the work and effort I put in [in Paris], and that was a history-making podium," Chiles said. The gymnast added, "I’m just very proud that I was a part of that. At the end of the day, I always just tell people, ‘I’m just like you guys. I’m trying to strive for greatness — just like everybody else.’”
