Jordan Spieth Drops Bold Masters Claim at Augusta National's Expense
@Source: newsweek.com
We are just 18 days away from the Masters, and like golf enthusiasts, players are feeling the heat. For some, like Scottie Scheffler, frustration is simmering just below the surface due to unmet expectations.Xander Schauffele is putting in the reps. Rory McIlroy, on the other hand, is gaining confidence in his game. But when we talk about Jordan Spieth, it hits a different tone. Why?After carding a 73 in the third round of the Players Championship, Spieth opened up about his game and thoughts about the Masters, per Golf.com."Augusta's just blown up more than it probably should be," Spieth said."In that sense, it gets blown up towards Rory. Majors are majors. Augusta's — you know, if you look at the field, it's technically the easiest major to win, so the more I think someone focuses on that, the better."Indeed, the field at Augusta National is shorter than at the other three major championships. But the course is so incredibly difficult. Players can be in contention one year, and miss the cut entirely the next.So, it is noteworthy when you hear someone of Spieth's caliber make a comment like that.Spieth has struggled to find his form in recent years, part of that due to injury. Interestingly though, the Green Jacket winner believes he doesn't need to be playing his best golf to do well at the Masters."I've been to the Masters when I was playing poorly and still had a chance to win [2015]. Now, I don't worry about how I'm playing. It doesn't matter. That's a good feeling."Spieth secured his first title at Augusta National back in 2015, at the age of 21. The Dallas native carded a two-under 70 to claim the title with a staggering 18-under total, edging out Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose.What do you think?
