Judgement Day winners and losers as new Wales option emerges and coach shows class
@Source: walesonline.co.uk
Judgement Day is over for another season and there was plenty to discuss in the aftermath of its tenth edition. A couple of sides boosted their hopes of reaching the United Rugby Championship play-off while another's took a significant blow in defeat. While Warren Gatland's long-term successor has not yet been announced there were plenty of players who put their hands up for a place on this summer's Wales tour of Japan with some strong performances as they went head-to-head with direct rivals. But Saturday's supposed grand event at the Principality Stadium was far from flawless with a crowd of just 28,328 in attendance. Here are you winners and losers from an action-packed day in Cardiff . To say it has been a rough couple of weeks for everyone associated with Cardiff rugby would be an understatement. The club's future was in jeopardy less than a fortnight ago after they were forced into administration before the Welsh Rugby Union launched a takeover. It would have been easy for the coaches and players to have been dragged down by the negativity but Cardiff put in one of their best performances of the season to overcome the Ospreys to win the Welsh Shield. Cardiff ripped the Ospreys to shreds at times behind the scrum and looked a well-coached side especially from an attacking point of view. Whoever replaces Gatland as permanent head coach of Wales could do worse than appoint the classy Sherratt as attack coach if he were interested. Judgement Day couldn't have gone better for the 24-year-old wing who bagged a hat-trick to fire Cardiff to the Welsh Shield with a 36-19 victory over the Ospreys . Hamer-Webb was outstanding throughout and was a constant threat with ball in hand who caused the Ospreys all manner of problems. The former Bath man started his try-scoring fest by turning Jack Walsh and Dan Kasende inside out to score at the corner. There was also a tremendous long-range finish for his second try while he completed his hat-trick at the death. The former England U20s wing impressed BBC ScrumV pundit Sean Holley enough for the former Ospreys coach to put his name forward as a contender for Wales' summer tour of Japan. Hamer-Webb is a powerful wing with pace to burn and is a good finisher at this level. Is he good enough to make the step up to Test rugby? We won't know unless he's given an opportunity but he is certainly doing his chances of a summer call-up no harm at all. The Scarlets kept alive their URC play-off hopes with a 31-23 bonus point victory over the Dragons but in all honesty it was a mediocre performance at best. Dwayne Peel's side were painfully inaccurate for large parts of the game and the pack was outplayed by the unfancied Dragons at times. But what the Scarlets do have is some x-factor behind the scrum, even if the attack was not firing as a unit. Wales internationals Tom Rogers and Blair Murray weren't without error but they do have a knack of making things happen. Murray looked dangerous with ball in hand, rarely failing to beat the first defender, and was strong in the air after the break. The 23-year-old also claimed the decisive try of the game, showing his pace to touch down in the 71st minute after a lovely chip over the top of the Dragons defence by Gareth Davies. Murray also made more clean line breaks than any other player on the field and was second on the carrying chart with 12. Rogers was another player who was far from perfect and perhaps should have stopped Jared Rosser's first try at the corner. But he came to life after the break and set up a try for Vaea Fifita at the corner which swung the momentum back the Scarlets' way. It was yet another defeat for the Dragons but this was a much better performance which offers some hope that head coach Filo Tiatia can at least make them more competitive next season. Wales star Aaron Wainwright was outstanding, making more carries than any other player on the field and consistently put the Dragons onto the front foot. His fellow Wales backrower Taine Basham also had an impressive game. Basham was left out of the last couple of Wales squads by Gatland but still has plenty to offer as an international player. The 25-year-old is a dynamic carrier capable of making significant post-contact metres while his work rate was very high at Judgement Day. The 27-year-old has stood out in what has been another extremely poor season in Gwent. Rosser was on Gatland's radar and has been on the periphery of the Wales squad in recent times only just missing out on selection. It will be interesting if Gatland's successor decides to take a look at him. There's an argument that a crowd of 28,328 was a decent return in the current climate but you can't get away from the fact this event has fallen in popularity. Cardiff's victory over the Ospreys was an enjoyable game which included plenty of excellent tries, while the later encounter between the Scarlets and Dragons was not decided until the final 10 minutes. But do not confuse entertainment with quality because these two fixtures were not of the same quality as elsewhere in the URC or the Gallagher Premiership and Top 14 this weekend. Wales' four professional clubs are operating from a salary cap of just £4.5m which will slowly rise over the next few seasons. They hope to become more competitive but they have a mountain to climb. The WRU needs to do a better job at selling the event in the future. Last week a 'content day', arranged by the WRU, was held at the Principality Stadium where the written press weren't even invited. The URC has never captured the imagination of the Welsh public and given the current apathy towards the professional game in Wales you'd have thought they'd be doing everything in their power to make a big song and dance about Judgement Day. But despite Saturday's meagre attendance there is merit in Judgement Day continuing and they will hope to have a bigger crowd next season. Despite Cardiff lifting the Welsh shield when at full strength the Ospreys remain the strongest of Wales' professional clubs. But they will be extremely disappointed at the way their season looks to be ending. The Ospreys had targeted reaching the Challenge Cup final, if not winning it. They missed a golden opportunity to beat French outfit Lyon in Swansea last weekend and had they won they would have hosted Racing 92 in the semi-finals before the final in Cardiff. But it wasn't to be and the Ospreys weren't at the races on Judgement Day. Mark Jones' side were without the injured Rhys Davies, Adam Beard and Justin Tipuric, which would not have helped matters. While they are still in contention to reach the play-off's they have an awful lot of catching up to do. A bonus point victory over the Dragons next weekend is a must while they might have to win both their matches in South Africa against the Sharks and the Lions, respectively. This was a much better performance by the Dragons but they still let it slip against a Scarlets side who were a long way off their best. They have not won a single league game since overcoming the Ospreys on the opening weekend of the season with their only other victory coming against Newcastle Falcons in the Challenge Cup. Performances have been slowly improving but they remain a long way off being competitive. They have made a plethora of new signings for next season which include Thomas Young, Seb Davies, Tinus de Beer, Wyn Jones and Harry Beddall, among others. There needs to be significant improvement over the next couple of seasons because this campaign has been nothing short of awful.
