A once promising footballer was caught with class A drugs hidden in his bottom while attempting to get into a Cardiff nightclub. He voluntarily produced Kinder eggs containing cocaine, MDMA and ketamine.
Joshua Harding, 26, attended the Depot warehouse in Butetown on November 10 last year when a security dog alerted staff. The defendant was searched and admitted being in possession of drugs.
A sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court on Thursday, March 27, heard Harding produced two Kinder egg capsules inside a condom from his anus. He claimed he had tried to smuggle the drugs into the venue for someone else. F or the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter
Prosecutor Alex Granville said the Kinder capsules were found to contain zip lock bags containing white powder, pink powder and some tablets. The substances were found to be cocaine, MDMA and ketamine, with a combined street value between £502 and £1,049. They had been separated into smaller amounts ready for street supply.
Harding, of Chichester Way, Caerau, was interviewed by police and admitted his culpability, but he would not provide the name of the person who provided him with the drugs. He also admitted he had previously smuggled £60 worth of ketamine into Depot in a similar fashion, as a "trial run".
The defendant pleaded guilty to two counts of possession with intent to supply class A drugs and one count of possession with intent to supply class B drugs. The court heard he was of previous good character.
In mitigation, Adam Sharp said his client was "heavily intoxicated" and under the influence of drugs at the time of the offences. He said the defendant was a user of drugs but since his arrest he had abstained from drug use. It was said he was previously a talented footballer who attended the Cardiff City Futsal Academy but an injury ended his career. Mr Sharp said his client now played as a goalkeeper for Cardiff Hibernian FC, coached junior and mini rugby for Caerau and Ely, and worked in Tesco.
Sentencing, Judge Daniel Williams said: "Those who play a significant role in street dealing of drugs face after conviction a prison sentence of four-and-a-half years, I hope you know that now." Harding was sentenced to two years imprisonment, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to carry out 250 hours unpaid work and a 10 day rehabilitation activity requirement.
