Justin Rose has spoken of his joy at watching Rory McIlroy become the first European to claim the career Grand Slam - even though it came at his own expense.
The 44-year-old Englishman put up a brave fight in his quest for a maiden green jacket and a second major during his sudden death play-off against McIlroy, but ultimately had to settle for a third career runners-up finish at Augusta on Sunday.
Despite starting the day seven strokes behind the Northern Irishman, the 2013 U.S. Open champion almost pulled off an unlikely victory. After the thrilling play-off, Rose was gracious in defeat, embracing McIlroy moments after his victory.
Speaking to the media afterwards, Rose revealed what he said to his friend and Ryder Cup team-mate during their emotional embrace. "I said to him, 'Listen, I was glad I was here on this green to witness you win the career Grand Slam,'" Rose shared.
"That's such a cool, momentous moment in the game of golf. Yeah, that was it. He was obviously pretty overcome with emotion and probably not going to be able to take in much at the time. But it was a big day in golf."
McIlroy returned the compliment in his post-championship press conference, admitting he felt pride competing against a fellow European for one of golf's grandest prizes, reports the Irish Mirror.
"I just congratulated him on a great week," he said at his post-Masters triumph press conference. "I said, so, ironic how these things happen. We were invited to a dinner by a few members of the club on Tuesday night and we were the only two players at that table and we were the ones who end up being in the playoff.
"It's funny how these things work, he's a great champion and displayed so much grace throughout his career. Selfishly I was happy it was another European in the playoff, we're on a good run at the minute, Ryder Cup this year."
Reflecting on Rose's second sudden-death playoff loss, McIlroy expressed empathy and optimism for the future: "Justin is a great champion and I remember watching the playoff in 2017 when he went up against Sergio.
"That didn't quite go his way either, he's had a phenomenal record around here, I feel for him as he's been so close. He's a good friend and hopefully he has a few more opportunities."
