Justin Thomas Gets Emotional at Valspar, Vulnerable Anxiety of Golf Explored
@Source: newsweek.com
Justin Thomas made the cut at the 2025 Valspar Championship by one stroke, but spent the latter half of the second round on the edge of his seat waiting to find out his fate. It wasn't until the end of the day that his chance to play the weekend became a reality.Thomas talked about it at the end of his performance in the second round. He described very vividly what a player feels in a situation where he does not know if he is going to miss the cut or not."You feel it [missing-the-cut anxiety] way before the final few holes. I've had it, unfortunately, a lot, since starting last week," Thomas said in earnest."It's real. It's hard to explain to people, but I've argued and probably will continue to, it's obviously very different, but it's sometimes more, I would say more often more nerve wracking than trying to win a golf tournament, just because -- especially a week like this, like I'm literally nine holes from leading the golf tournament right now, and I might not even get to play this weekend.""So it sucks, because I'm really -- I really played well today and a lot of things are going well, but, you know, I just have to hope and hope somehow the wind keeps blowing."The double major champion also revealed how it feels to follow the tournament as he waits to find out whether or not he will be playing the next day:"It's like a drug, you just keep getting more and more of it and it's not good for you at all and you get pissed off and you're mad at bounces and putts lipping in and the wind dying down. But it is what it is, I can't control it, I should have just played better and wouldn't be here."Justin Thomas got off to a slow start at the Valspar Championship, carding three birdies and five bogeys in the first round to finish at 2-over. He fared much better a day later when he carded two birdies and a bogey for a 1-under for the round, taking his 36-hole score to 1-over.The cut line was projected to be exactly 1-over for most of Friday afternoon. Having played in the morning wave, Thomas had to endure hours of uncertainty, not knowing whether to pack his bags or not.The 31-year-old couldn't relax until late in the day when Neal Shipley bogeyed the 18th to move the cut line to 2-over. It was time for Thomas to breathe a little easier.Prior to the Valspar Championship, Justin Thomas played in seven PGA Tour events, five of which were 36-hole cut events. He managed to make it into the weekend in all of them.His season results include three top-10s, including a tie for second at The American Express. He has also played at a very high level at times, such as his second round at The PLAYERS Championship when he tied the TPC Sawgrass record (62).More Golf: Sahith Theegala Goes Berserk at Valspar Championship, Chucks Club
