Kamilla Cardoso chases gold with Brazil as Sky weigh return timeline

Kamilla Cardoso is chasing gold — and making history along the way.
The Sky center will suit up for Brazil in Sunday night’s FIBA AmeriCup championship game in Chile. Cardoso dominated the tournament, averaging 19 points and 12 rebounds in wins against Mexico and Argentina.
She also tied the tournament’s all-time record for blocks and became the sixth-leading rebounder in AmeriCup history.
The trip came just as Cardoso was finding her groove with the Sky, averaging 17 points over her last four WNBA games before leaving for international duty.
“I know our team can’t wait for her to get back, but she’s got business to deal with tonight,” head coach Tyler Marsh said before the Sky’s game against the Lynx at Target Center.
The Sky are still determining whether Cardoso will rejoin them in Washington for Tuesday’s game against the Mystics or meet the team back in Chicago ahead of Wednesday’s matchup with the Wings.
To win the AmeriCup title, Brazil will have to get past a U.S. team led by a trio of high-profile college stars: Hannah Hidalgo, Olivia Miles and Flau’jae Johnson — all projected top WNBA draft picks in the next two years.
All-Star Business
Hours after being named to her second straight All-Star team, Angel Reese launched a new All-Star edition of her “Mebounds” apparel line.
The phrase started as a dig from online critics — that she only scores off her own misses — but Reese flipped it into a brand of her own.
“I try to make as much money when I’m sleeping as when I’m awake,” she said pregame.
She also sees a link between her entrepreneurship and what players want in the league’s next collective bargaining agreement.
“Revenue share is something that we’re negotiating in our CBA,” she said. “Why not be able to do it with my own brand right now?”
There’ll be plenty of business on the table at All-Star, too. After the league and the players’ union rejected each other’s initial proposals, CBA negotiations will reportedly continue through All-Star weekend in Indianapolis on July 19. The deadline to reach a deal is Oct. 31.
