Kasper Schmeichel puts Celtic on alert as Cristiano Ronaldo penalty denier makes hospital visit
@Source: dailyrecord.co.uk
Kasper Schmeichel was taken to hospital following Denmark's Nations League quarter-final defeat to Portugal. The Celtic keeper seemed to injure his shoulder after following awkwardly during the first half of extra-time as the Danes saw a 1-0 first leg lead wiped out in a thrilling encounter that eventually witnessed the hosts running out 5-3 winners on aggregate. Schmeichel enjoyed a dream start to the game, saving a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty after just six minutes. But both sides swapped goals until Portugal lead 3-2 to force extra-time and eventually progress to the semi-finals. But now Celtic face an anxious wait to discover the extent of Schmeichel's injury and whether or not he will be fit to face Hearts at Parkhead on Saturday when the Scottish Premiership action resumes. Brendan Rodgers ' side are desperate to bounce back from their 3-2 derby defeat to Rangers before the international break, which saw a five-year unbeaten home run against their rivals come to an end and cut the gap at the top to 10 points. The Hoops remain three wins from clinching the title and also have a Scottish Cup semi-final clash with St Johnstone to come. Rodgers could do with having the experienced keeper fit. Danish outlet Bold claims that he was taken to a Lisbon hospital to be checked over along with team doctor Morten Boesen. And Denmark boss Brian Riemer admits he would have subbed Schmeichel if he could have but the keeper insisted he wanted to keep playing. "If it had been possible, I would have replaced Kasper Schmeichel because he was injured, but we had already made all our substitutions. "We talked about Kasper Schmeichel going out, but he didn't want to go out himself. As long as he could stand in goal, it was an advantage for us to have 11 players on the field. "The alternative was that we only had nine outfield players if we had to put a man off the field and on goal." Denmark's defeat means they will now be in Scotland's World Cup qualification group along with Greece, who ran out 3-0 winners at Hampden.
