Kate O’Connor makes Irish athletics history with stunning pentathlon silver medal at World Indoor Champs

KATE O'Connor has claimed Ireland's first World Indoor Championships medal since 2006 with a silver in the pentathlon. Fresh off winning European Indoor bronze earlier this month, she posted three personal bests across her five events. In doing so she became the first Irish athlete to medal on this global stage since Derval O'Rourke took gold in Moscow 19 years ago. The 24-year-old put on a career-best performance in the 60m hurdles, shot put and long jump. Saga Vanninen of Finland backed up her triumph at the European Indoors as she again reigned supreme over all comers. Her combined total of 4,821 points was only 79 more than O'Connor registered, however, with a further 72 between second and third place. The manner with which she secured her runner-up spot in the standings couldn't have been much more dramatic either. There was disappointment for other Irish athletes though across this morning/afternoon's session. Andrew Coscoran didn't make it through to the 1500m final. His time of 3:40.79 was only fractionally bettered by that of Austria's Raphael Pallitsch who came in 0.71 of a second quicker. That particular heat was won by Norwegian superstar Jakob Ingebrigtsen in a time of 3:39.80. Sonia O'Sullivan's daughter Sophie also came up just short in her 1500m heat. She can take solace, however, from recording a new personal best of 4:16.68 which was good enough for sixth place. More to follow...
