The Katsina State Government has unveiled eight newly acquired Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), bringing the state’s total fleet to 43, the largest in Nigeria’s northwest region. The launch, led by Acting Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe, follows a State Security Council meeting and aims to intensify efforts against banditry and kidnapping plaguing the state. The deployment of these APCs comes in the wake of a recent attack in Unguwar Mantau, Malumfashi Local Government Area, where bandits targeted worshippers during morning prayers, killing 28 and kidnapping several others. Local resistance, supported by vigilantes and security forces, led to the rescue of 76 victims. Jobe condemned the attackers as “cowards” and vowed that the state would not relent until banditry is eradicated. “The battle is not over until it is won,” he declared, emphasizing the need for community cooperation in sharing timely intelligence to aid security operations. Katsina’s investment in security, estimated at ₦36 billion, includes not only the APCs but also surveillance equipment, combat gear, and support for the Nigerian Army, Air Force, Police, DSS, vigilante groups, and the state’s Community Watch Corps. The state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu Danmusa, highlighted that Katsina now boasts one of the highest numbers of security assets in the region, with four of its eight frontline local governments—Jibia, Batsari, Kankara, and Danmusa—already secured. The Acting Governor announced that the Chief of Army Staff is scheduled to visit Katsina for an on-ground assessment of security challenges, particularly the difficult terrain where bandits operate. “With these new vehicles and federal support, we are confident in overcoming these challenges,” Jobe said, urging residents to remain vigilant and provide actionable intelligence. The APCs, part of Katsina’s broader strategy to enhance operational mobility, are expected to improve rapid response capabilities in vulnerable areas. Danmusa emphasized the importance of community-driven security efforts, stating, “Our doors are open for anyone willing to assist.” The state’s efforts also include training for security personnel and community-based initiatives to strengthen local resistance against banditry. This latest acquisition builds on Nigeria’s growing emphasis on domestic defense production, with companies like Equipment Protective Applications International Limited (EPAIL) supplying locally made vehicles to enhance self-reliance. Katsina’s bolstered fleet positions it as a leader in regional security infrastructure, aiming to restore peace and stability for its citizens.
