Keacy Carty's 170 Powers West Indies To Their Second Highest Score In ODI History
@Source: news18.com
West Indies find themselves in the history books as Keacy Carty’s mammoth 170-run knock in 142 balls, alongside cameos by Shai Hope and Justin Greaves, powered the Men in Maroon to a whopping first-innings score of 385 runs for the loss of seven wickets at the Castle Avenue in Dublin. Barry McCarthy, Ireland’s pacer, started off well in the powerplay overs and got rid of both Brandon King and Evin Lewis fairly cheaply, but once Carty and Hope came into the middle, the duo managed to put together a 137-run stand in 147 balls to stabilise their innings. The ODI skipper, Hope, was going at a fairly brisk pace, scoring at a run-a-ball rate whilst Carty took it easy. But once Andy McBrine got the breakthrough to remove Hope, Carty went on to up his scoring rate and put together a quickfire 77-run stand alongside Amir Jangoo. Following George Dockrell’s breakthrough to remove Jangoo, the next partnership yielded a 97-run partnership in just 40 balls, with Justin Greaves scoring 50 in 23 balls. Meanwhile, Carty ended up doing most of the heavy lifting amidst a rain threat and finished with a whopping first-innings score. He ended up smashing 15 boundaries and eight sixes in his knock. This now becomes the West Indies’ second-highest innings total in their history in one-day cricket. The highest being 389, which they scored in a losing cause against England at the Queen’s Park in Grenada back in 2019. Earlier in the previous ODI against Ireland, Matthew Forde also equalled the record for the joint-fastest fifty in the format after he smashed it in 16 balls just two days prior. His knock was laced with 2 boundaries and eight sixes. The stellar batting display in the third ODI came in at a crucial period when the West Indies were trailing in the three-match series, having conceded the only defeat in the opening game. The second match ended up being washed out as well. The third game is at risk of being abandoned, but the second innings has been reduced to 46 overs with the revised target being 363.
