DETROIT -- Kerry Carpenter homered twice to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 7-4 win over the Chicago White Sox in Friday’s home opener before a sellout crowd of 44,735 at Comerica Park. The Tigers (3-4) and White Sox (2-5) meet twice more this weekend. Tigers starter Jack Flaherty allowed just one run in 5 2/3 innings, striking out seven, in his first appearance in Detroit since July 10 of last year. Carpenter’s first home run, in the first inning, wrapped just inside the right-field foul pole. First base umpire Vic Carapazza, having lost the ball in flight, pointed foul somewhat hesitantly. But after a quick huddle with the other umpires, it was ruled a home run, and Carpenter was able to finish his trot around the bases. The White Sox tied the game at 1 in the top of the second when catcher Matt Thaiss walked and scored on Brooks Baldwin’s double to left field. The Tigers appeared to have Thaiss out at the plate by 10 feet, but catcher Dillon Dingler lost his grasp on the ball as he lunged to make the tag. The Tigers retook the lead in the third inning when White Sox starter Jonathan Cannon hit Spencer Torkelson with a pitch and then walked Colt Keith. Both runners came around to score. After Cannon retired the first two batters in the fourth, White Sox rookie manager Will Venable turned to left-handed reliever Brandon Eister to face Carpenter, a left-handed hitter. But Carpenter, who had hit just four of his 45 career homers against lefties, blasted a slider to the seats in left field. Another left-handed hitter, Riley Greene, followed with an opposite-field double to left. He scored on Torkelson’s single to give the Tigers a 5-1 lead. The Tigers’ lefty-on-lefty work wasn’t done. In the fifth inning, left-handed hitter Zach McKinstry singled and scored on left-handed hitter Trey Sweeney’s triple to deep center. Greene had the biggest blast of the game, a 417-foot bomb to right field in the sixth inning. The solo shot off reliever Bryse Wilson registered as the third-hardest-hit home run (114.3 mph) in the Statcast era (2015–present). The White Sox tried to mount a comeback in the ninth by opening with three straight hits against veteran Kenta Maeda. All three runs scored, but reliever Will Vest got a couple of groundouts and then struck out Luis Robert to end the game. This story will be updated. Up next: If the rain holds off, the Tigers and White Sox will meet again on Saturday at 1:10 p.m. at Comerica Park. Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (0-1, 7.71 ERA) will face Sox righty Davis Martin (0-0, 0.00). Martin threw six scoreless innings in his season debut on March 30 against the Angels. Olson allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings on March 29 against the Dodgers.
