Kilmarnock boss admits 'disjointed' side were fortunate to pick up a point in Hibs draw

Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes confessed his side looked ‘disjointed’ but reckons they picked up a valuable point against Hibs at Rugby Park. An injury-time leveller from Fraser Murray ensured it was a share of the spoils but few would argue it was a deserved outcome after 90 minutes in which Hibs largely dominated. As has so often been the case during this frustrating season for Killie, they shot themselves in the foot when their own corner-kick led to Hibs taking the lead within seconds. A botched routine was pounced on with the away side charging up the park with three players while Lewis Mayo was stranded for Killie. Dylan Levitt took the ball 50 yards before playing in Martin Boyle who found the bottom corner beyond the onrushing Robby McCrorie. Hibs controlled much of the play and would have doubled their lead before the interval if not for Bobby Wales hooking a Nectarios Triantis effort off the line from a corner. While the away side looked threatening and controlled the play, they created little in terms of gilt-edged chances and they were made to pay. Bruce Anderson had the ball in the net for Killie but was flagged for offside before Murray’s late drama. The former Hibs man smashed home from a Joe Wright header to end his side’s run of defeats at three games. Afterwards, McInnes was full of praise for the opposition while highlighting his own side’s desire to fight to the end. He said: “It’s a testament to the players that they keep going and they keep having that resilience. “We huffed and puffed at times and a lot of our work wasn’t convincing. The goal we lost epitomised the way we were in the first half. I thought we were disjointed. “This is the best Hibs team we’ve come up against for a while. I think you see that in the way they play. They arrived with a lot of confidence and they’ve got a bit of everything – they’ve got size, they’ve got pace, they’ve got ball-players. “If you go after them in a press they’ll bang it in behind and they did it two or three times and it spooked us defensively. We just looked a bit uneasy and a bit unsure of ourselves.” He added: “The team wasn’t quite right and we’ve worked on a plan this week to find ways against teams who are better than you and Hibs are better than us. “They’ve got better players and the league table shows that. You’ve got to try and find different ways of winning but it certainly wasn’t what we envisaged in terms of performance. “We deserved something against Aberdeen at Pittodrie a few weeks ago and we lost the game. We then deserved something at Ross County but I think it would be hard to say we deserved it today. Hibs were the better team. They’re in a good place just now so it’s no disgrace but they took advantage of some of our uncertainty. “When we wake up in the cold light of day tomorrow morning it’s a good point considering the opponent and considering we never really had the confidence and assurance we normally have. We never really looked in charge at all.” Don't miss the latest Ayrshire headlines – sign up to our free daily newsletter
