Kilmarnock Junior Ice Hockey Club have become the first junior team in Scotland to establish an under-16 girls squad after launching the Kilmarnock Lightning. It’s a huge step forward for girls’ ice hockey in Ayrshire, and indeed Scotland, with the initiative representing a significant milestone in providing young female athletes with a clear pathway into the sport. The Lightning is aimed at offering girls the opportunity to develop their skills, build confidence, and experience the thrill of competitive ice hockey in a supportive and welcoming environment. The team are being led by a terrific all-female coaching staff who boast significant experience in the game. Head Coach Eleanor Callaghan is a former Great Britain international while Ruby Newlands is part of the current GB set-up. They’ll be joined by Elite League netminder Megan Craig. Club officials and coaches are thrilled about the team’s formation, emphasising their commitment to growing the sport among young girls. Head Coach Callaghan said: “We are incredibly proud to be pioneers in Scottish junior ice hockey by launching this team. “Our goal is to inspire more girls to get involved in the sport and to create a strong foundation for future generations of female players.” The team is actively welcoming new players, regardless of experience. Whether they are completely new to ice hockey or have played before, all girls under 16 are encouraged to give it a try. With dedicated coaching and access to excellent facilities, it’s a fantastic opportunity for young athletes to get involved in the sport.
