Kilmarnock ship three in late collapse as they fall to defeat in Motherwell
@Source: dailyrecord.co.uk
A late collapse that saw Motherwell net three times in nine minutes saw Kilmarnock fall to a 3-0 defeat at Fir Park. Just a day after Derek McInnes confirmed an agreement had been reached between Killie and Hearts for him to take over the Tynecastle hotseat, he was in the dugout searching for a fourth successive victory. The decision for McInnes to remain in his post for the final two games - including Sunday's season finale at home to his prospective new employers - hasn't gone down well with the Rugby Park faithful. And the travelling supporters aired their views with a number of chants across the 90 minutes. There was one change to the starting line-up from their weekend win over Dundee, with skipper Kyle Vassell making his first start since suffering an ankle injury in early January. The visitors started the game brightly, forcing a series of corners, but had nothing to show for their efforts. Bruce Anderson was found in space on eight minutes but a poor first touch was followed by the striker losing his footing. The club's top scorer fashioned their next opportunity, too, but he couldn't get enough power on a header from Danny Armstrong's corner-kick. Having enjoyed the brighter start, Killie shot themselves in the foot just before the half hour mark when they were reduced to 10 men. Robbie Deas, fresh off signing a two-year deal, was initially shown a yellow card for a lunge on Lennon Miller on the edge of the box. After being called to the monitor by VAR Greg Aitken, referee Duncan Nicholson overturned his call and produced the red card. While the Well controlled much of the play for the remainder of the first half, it was Killie who went the closest to scoring when Armstrong's free-kick looked destined for the top corner before Aston Oxborough produced a terrific save to claw it away. Both sides made changes at the break with the hosts looking to take the game to Killie, who took off both strikers in a bid to become more difficult to break down. Motherwell went close to opening the scoring just four minutes into the second half as Steve Seddon's enticing delivery to the back post was met by Tony Watt, but the veteran striker's effort was smothered by Kieran O'Hara. The keeper was called into action again to palm away a fizzing Callum Slattery effort from 25 yards. The hosts were predictably on top, but couldn't find their shooting boots. Luke Armstrong saw an effort deflect wide for a corner, from which Moses Ebiye was unable to make a near instant impact off the bench as he was unable to get enough power on the ball with O'Hara clutching safely. It felt like only a matter of time before the Well got themselves in front and they duly did that with 13 minutes left on the clock. A wonderful delivery into the box from Stephen O'Donnell was headed home by Armstrong. One quickly became three as the hosts netted three times in nine minutes. Callum Slattery doubled the lead within five minutes with a lovely sweeping effort into the far corner before Armstrong made it a double with a fierce strike from the edge of the box that O'Hara was unable to stop. A sole bright spot for Killie was the introduction of youngster Cole Burke for his professional debut late on but that did little to cheer the mood on a miserable evening.
