Kimmi Ascanio scores first professional goal as Wave beat Stars 3-0 in Chicago

The visiting San Diego Wave made history on Saturday, starting three 17-year-olds as they visited the Chicago Stars.
It was extra special for one of the three teenagers. Midfielder Kimmi Ascanio scored her first-ever professional goal in the waning minutes of a dominant 3-0 win over the Stars at SeatGeek Stadium. The Wave improved to 3-2-1 this season. More importantly, they seem to have shaken the scoring issues that led to three coaching changes and a roster overhaul during and after the 2024 season.
“It’s a huge moment for me,” an emotional Ascanio said postgame. “This is my second year in the league, and to finally put it in the back of the net … that’s just been my goal for a while. I’m very, very happy to be able to do that.”
San Diego has scored 12 goals in its six matches, trailing only the Orlando Pride and Kansas City Current, who are tied for the National Women’s Soccer League lead with 14 apiece. The Wave have scored three or more goals in back-to-back games for the first time since 2023.
The Wave and Stars played a scoreless half-hour before another one of the Wave’s teenagers, Trinity Armstrong, deflected an errant clear by the Stars. The ball went to Hanna Lundkvist, who buried a goal past United States Women’s National Team regular Alyssa Naeher for a 1-0 lead.
The Wave got a little lucky in the 81st minute when Adriana Leon’s shot deflected off the shin of Chicago’s Sam Staab. Chicago (1-5-0) was called for an own-goal, making it 2-0.
Ascanio put the finishing touches on the win in stoppage time, taking a pass from Leon and placing the ball into the side of the net.
Ascanio is part of the Wave’s youth movement, alongside Armstrong and fellow teenager Melanie Barcenas, a San Diego native. A Florida native, Ascanio signed with the Wave last March, made her pro debut a month later and appeared in six matches. The midfielder hadn’t scored before Saturday.
The Wave will return home May 4 to take on Bay FC at 5 p.m.
