@Source: mirror.co.uk
Football legend David Beckham has said he is truly humbled after being awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours List. The ex-England and Manchester United player, who was given an OBE in 2003, said he was "immensly proud" for the gong to services to sport and charity. Sir David joins 1,215 recognised in the Honours List, including The Who singer Roger Daltrey, Hollywood icon Gary Oldman, TV legends Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, and teenage darts sensastion Luke Littler. Hundreds of everyday heroes including anti-knife crime campaigners, an 11-year-old fundraiser, and community champions up and down he country are also celebrated. Sir David, who has been a goodwill ambassador for Unicef for two decades and recently celebrated his 50th birthday, said he was grateful to be recognised. In a statement, the icon said: “Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour. To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true." He added: "Off the pitch I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation. I’m so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I’m grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.” Keir Starmer said: “This year’s Birthday Honours List is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary dedication, compassion, and service that exists in every corner of our country. From community champions to cultural icons, each recipient reflects the very best of Britain. I extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to them all.” Alison Madgin, whose daughter was fatally stabbed has said she broke down in tears when receiving news of her MBE. The-60-year-old said she was "gobsmacked" after being named in the King's Birthday Honours List alongside daughter Carly Barrett, 34, for services to the prevention of knife crime. Alison's daughter Samantha, 18, was killed in Wallsend, North Tyneside, in 2007, after she was stabbed when she attempted to break up a fight. Her family set up Samantha's legacy to educate young people about the dangers of knife crime. Carly told The Mirror : "All the work we do, we never do it for any recognition. We do it because we're passionate about making that change." Bereaved mum Pooja Kanda has also been awarded for her efforts to fight knife crime after her 16-year-old son Ronan was murdered with a ninja sword yards away from his home. Ministers have stood by the promise to introduce Ronan's Law - named after the teen who was killed in Wolverhampton in 2022 - to ban the deadly weapons. Ms Kanda said: "The day I heard about the OBE, I held his picture. I shed tears. I know that the OBE is in my name, but this is for my son." Nour Norris also receives an OBE for services to preventing violence against women and girls. She has campaigned relentlessly to change the law in memory of her niece Raneem Oudeh and her sister Khaola Saleem, who were killed after a string of shocking failures. Earlier this year ministers launched Raneem's Law to embed domestic abuse specialists in 999 control rooms and improve the way police deal with abuse victims. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told The Mirror: “For most of us, it is thankfully impossible to imagine how it would feel to lose a family member to an act of violence. But think of the courage and strength it would take to suffer that loss, and then devote yourself to trying to save the lives of other people, so that families you will never meet do not have to endure that same pain." She added: “In the King’s Birthday Honours, a number of those individuals are rightly recognised for their work, including two women who have been a personal inspiration to me. "Pooja Kanda, who has campaigned to ban ninja swords and tackle the online sale of knives to teenagers in memory of her son Ronan, and Nour Norris, who has fought to put domestic violence specialists in 999 control rooms after the murder of her sister Khaola and her niece Raneem." TV presenter Tess Daly shed tears when she opened the letter telling her she was to be made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to broadcasting. The 56-year-old has been recognised, with her Strictly Come Dancing co-host Claudia Winkleman also becoming an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours. But it could have all gone horribly wrong for Tess as the letter almost didn’t get to her in time to accept. Tess said: "This genuinely came as the greatest surprise of my life. I don't think I've come back down to earth yet, I didn't see it coming, and it almost didn't happen, because the letter went to the wrong address. "And thank goodness, someone very kind found me. And so by the time I got it, I only had, I think it was two or three days left to accept it. There's a deadline of acceptance. I can't imagine not ever wanting to accept such a wonderful award. But of course I did." Strictly co-host Claudia said she was "incredibly grateful" to receive the honour, adding: "I will buy a hat and am taking my mum. I am ridiculously lucky and will celebrate with Tess by doing a paso doble.” Teenage darts sensation Luke Littler and world number one Luke Humphries are recognised today. The 18-year-old - nicknamed 'the Nuke' - became the PDC World Darts Champion back in January - 12 months after losing out to Humphries. It comes as the duo - both awarded MBEs for services to darts - prepare to lead the England team at the World Cup of Darts this weekend in Frankfurt, Germany. Sarah Virginia Wade, the former British tennis champion who won at Wimbledon in 1977, also recieves a CBE for services to the sport. She was previously awarded an OBE. England footballer Rachel Daly becomes an MBE for services to Association Football. Rugby league legend Sir Billy Boston, 90, is also named in the list. He received his knighthood from King Charles Buckingham Palace at Buckingham Palace earlier this week - ahead of the official publication of the list - due to health concerns It was revealed Sir Billy, who scored 478 tries in 488 matches for Wigan after making the switch from rugby union in 1953, was living with vascular dementia in 2016. PM Keir Starmer also said on Tuesday it was a "historic wrong" that no rugby league player had been knighted before. Veteran William Irwin is the oldest person on the King's Birthday Honours List at the age of 106. He has been awarded with a BEM for services to the community in Coleraine, County Londonderry and is one of three honours recipients over the last ten years aged 106. In 1988 he helped found the Coleraine Probus Club, a cross-community club for retirees. Carmela Chillery-Watson, 11, is also the youngest person ever to be awarded an MBE. Carmela from Dorset has LMNA congenital muscular dystrophy - a progressive muscle-wasting condition which affects her movement, heart and lungs. She has raised more than £400,000 for Muscular Dystrophy UK by completing challenges. She said: "I'm just really ecstatic and surprised that I'm receiving the honour. It's incredible." Carmela's mother Lucy Chillery-Watson said she was "bursting with pride" over her daughter becoming an MBE. "Since the moment she was born she showed true resilience and determination - growing up with health conditions, one after the other," she added. "She's making a huge difference in the world." Former Tory Cabinet minister Penny Mordaunt , who ran twice for the leadership of the Conservative Party, becomes a dame in Saturday's King's Birthday Honours List. The ex-Tory MP, who lost her seat at last year's election, saw her profile boosted by her sword-carrying role as Lord President of the Council during King Charles III's 2023 coronation spectacle at Westminster Abbey. It was the first time the duty had been carried out by a woman. She said: "It is lovely to be appreciated in this way, and I'm very conscious that everything I have ever got done has been with the help and efforts of others. So I'm feeling very grateful on many counts today." The Labour MP Chi Onwurah, who chairs the Commons Science and Technology Committee, also said she was "totally overwhelmed and surprised" to become a dame. Dame Chi said: "I grew up on a council estate in Newcastle in a one-parent family. I never thought about being made a dame, as you can imagine." Her colleague Mark Tami, the Labour MP for Alyn and Deeside since 2001, who has also served as a Labour whip since 2010, said he was "shocked" to receive a knighthood. Former Conservative health minister Maria Caulfield, who becomes a CBE, also said said she was "really surprised" at the honour.
