Karnataka State Cricket Association president Raghuram Bhat on Saturday announced that the resignations of A Shankar and ES Jairam, the secretary and treasurer of the governing body, were accepted during an emergency meeting. However, he ruled out dissolving the rest of the managing committee.
The emergency meeting was called after the two senior officials stepped down from their roles through a letter to the KSCA president, taking moral responsibility for the stampede in which 11 fans died and 56 others were injured.
“I convened an emergency MC meeting because two of our members — secretary and treasurer — resigned on moral grounds. They submitted their resignation letters to the committee, which were accepted after acknowledging their contributions over the last two and a half years,” Bhat said after the meeting.
Bhat did not reveal the names of the interim secretary and treasurer, but MS Vinay and Manjunatha Raju are the frontrunners for the posts.
The current managing committee’s term will end on September 30, with the state association elections due in October or November. An FIR has been filed against the KSCA in connection with the stampede that marred Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s victory celebrations on June 4 and Bhat stated that the association would fully cooperate with any legal proceedings.
“I cannot discuss this further as it is a court matter. It is a sensitive issue, and at the appropriate time, I will provide detailed information,” he said.
The former India left-arm spinner emphasized that the purpose of the managing committee meeting was to ensure the smooth conduct of the game despite the setback.
“There is no plan to dissolve the MC. We met today because the game must continue, which is why the emergency meeting was held. Everything else is fine at the moment,” he added.
Several top state police officials visited the association during the day. Bhat assured full cooperation with any investigation, stating, “We have already informed the government and the honorable High Court that we will cooperate with the investigation. We will not shy away from anything, and we are ready to assist with the investigation.”
