Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated Phase I of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy (LBPA) in Assam, marking a significant milestone for the state. The event was attended by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other notable dignitaries. Spanning over 350 acres, LBPA is set to become one of India’s largest police training facilities. During the ceremony, Shah laid the foundation stone for Phase II of the academy and unveiled its official logo. He paid tribute to the legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, recalling his historic victory over the Mughals, which forced their retreat from Assam. In his address, Shah highlighted the success of the Advantage Assam 2.0 initiative, commending Chief Minister Sarma’s efforts. He announced that, in addition to the Rs 5 lakh crore investment secured during the recent investment summit, the Central government would soon allocate an additional Rs 3 lakh crore to the state. Shah expressed confidence that LBPA would become the nation’s top police academy within five years. He also criticized the Congress, contrasting the Rs 1 lakh crore Assam received during its 10-year rule with the Rs 4 lakh crore granted under the BJP-led government. “Our efforts have not only brought peace and stability to Assam and the Northeast but have also ensured tangible progress,” Shah stated. He emphasized that LBPA would serve as a center for advanced policing across the region. Chief Minister Sarma underscored the BJP’s commitment to honoring Lachit Barphukan as a national hero. He noted that despite Barphukan’s significant contributions, no initiatives were taken in his name post-independence until now. “After 400 years of his birth, we are finally celebrating his legacy in his homeland,” Sarma remarked. Also Read: Amit Shah Affirms Commitment to India's 2036 Olympics Hosting BidMeanwhile, Union Minister of Ports and Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal also addressed the gathering.
