@Source: newsweek.com
Las Vegas has already had its wettest May on record, only seven days into the month.Why It MattersLas Vegas is known for its dry, desert climate. Heavy rain is not typical for May, as the Nevada city's highest rainfall amounts typically occur during the monsoon season from July to August or the winter months of January and February. The rain is expected to bring some short-term relief for drought impacts, given that the entirety of Clark County is suffering from severe drought, with nearly 88 percent of the county facing extreme drought and 24 percent facing exceptional drought, the worst drought category.What to KnowAfter four consecutive days of rainfall, Las Vegas has already set numerous records this month.On Monday, Las Vegas broke a 56-year-old daily rainfall record at Harry Reid International Airport after receiving 0.57 inches of rain. The previous record of .04 inches of rain was set in 1969.In the days since, Sin City has broken numerous other records, including: Monthly rainfall record. Prior to this year, the wettest May on record was May 1969, when .96 inches of rain fell throughout the entire month. So far this month, Las Vegas has received 1.44 inches of rain, nearly half an inch more than the prior record with three weeks left in the month. May 3 through May 6 became the first time "measurable precipitation occurred during the month of May (three consecutive days occurred twice, between May 5-7, 1969 and May 15-17, 1949)," NWS Las Vegas posted on X, formerly Twitter. Tuesday became the third wettest May day since records began in 1937 after .61 inches of rain fell. Tuesday's totals are surpassed by May 13, 1989, at .63 inches, and May 16, 1987, at .83 inches. In addition to setting multiple records, the rain is also expected to provide some short-term drought relief across the city. Clark County is suffering from severe drought, with nearly 88 percent facing extreme drought and 24 percent facing exceptional drought, the worst drought category.Las Vegas' highest rainfall amounts typically occur during the monsoon season from July to August or the winter months of January and February.In addition to the rain, there were also warnings for hail and flash floods during the storm.What People Are SayingNWS lead meteorologist Chris Outler, who works at the Las Vegas office, told Newsweek: "The wettest month we've ever had was March 1992...and that month had 4.8 inches of rain."Outler added it's very unlikely this month will surpass the wettest month of all time. "Because May is our second driest month, I think reaching up to those numbers of March values is really unlikely."NWS Las Vegas in a post on X, formerly Twitter: "Any more rain received this month will only pad the lead that we have over the previous wettest May."What Happens NextOutler said there's no rain in the immediate forecast, but there's still plenty of time for Las Vegas to accrue more rainfall over the coming weeks before May ends. Forecasts anticipate parts of Southern Nevada could see more rain than is usual for the next six to 10 days, according to the NWS Climate Prediction Center precipitation outlook.
