Lauren Boebert Reacts to Trump Getting Hit in the Face by Microphone
@Source: newsweek.com
Representative Lauren Boebert, a Colorado Republican, commented on a video of President Donald Trump getting hit in the face with a reporter's microphone to take a dig at former President Joe Biden.Newsweek reached out to Biden's press representatives via email for comment on Saturday.Why It MattersTrump appeared to respond to the incident with humor, but some conservative supporters treated it as a potential security lapse, in the light of the assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last year, and the arrest of an armed man at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, two months later.What to KnowA video of the incident shared to X, formerly Twitter, racked up millions of views and was shared by thousands across the social media platform.Boebert, a strong supporter of the president, made light of the clip and took aim at Trump's predecessor."A blow like that would've laid Biden out!" she quipped.The Republican congresswoman was apparently referencing widespread concerns about Biden's age and fragility during his tenure as president. The former president was 82 when he left office in January, and suffered a number of high-profile falls and stumbles, which critics routinely shared videos of across social media to suggest he was unfit for office.In the incident captured in the new viral video, Trump was taking questions from journalists at a military airfield when a reporter nudged a boom microphone across his face, apparently by accident. The impact was softened by the mic's fluffy "dead cat" cover, which is used to minimize the sound of wind and other noises during filming outdoors.Video of the incident shows Trump moving his head back as the mic makes contact, then glaring toward the individual responsible before raising both eyebrows. He went on to joke about the incident."She just made television tonight" he said, referencing the reporter involved. "She just became a big story tonight."What People Are SayingNick Sortor, a prominent internet personality, wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "WATCH: A reporter just HIT President Trump with a microphone. But 47 handled it like a PRO. Who the hell did it?"Laura Loomer, a prominent conservative influencer with more than 1.5 million X followers, wrote: "How on earth did a reporter get that boom mic so close to Trump's face? This just doesn't seem right. Security should tighten up. Embarrassing for the press."Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk posted to X: "President Trump was just smacked in the face by a reporter's boom mic. Unreal these people. Have some respect."What Happens Next?It appears unlikely than any investigation into the incident will move forward but concerns about Trump's security will persist given the previous assassination attempts. Meanwhile, Republicans are likely to make more comparisons between Trump and Biden moving forward.
