A Leading lawyer who had a kidney transplant is now facing a second one after being told the organ is starting to fail. Jelina Berlow-Rahman, had her first kidney transplant in 2009 after being diagnosed with kidney disease when she was 17. The auto-immune disease SLE caused her kidneys to fail and she had a transplant in 2009 at the age of 30. In January, the 46-year-old was told her current kidney has 15 per cent capacity left and she will probably need to return to dialysis in six months time. Jelina, who runs her own legal -practice in Glasgow, has now been placed on a two-year waiting list and is hoping a family member might be able to become a donor. Most people who have a successful kidney -transplant will need a replacement during their lifetime. Mum-of-one Jelina has now called for more funding for research into kidney disease and called for more donors to come forward. Jelina said: “There has been a gradual decline over the last 15 years with my donated kidney , which is normal. “In November I was told that the kidney had 20 per cent capacity left but that dropped to 15 per cent by January. “An average transplant can last for between 10 and 20 years if you are lucky, so long as there are no complications. “While any transplant is amazing and gives you a new life, it is still definitely not a cure. “If you are a young person when you have a transplant, as I was, then it is certain you will need another. That is why we need more awareness about kidney disease and more donors.” Last month the lawyer became the first woman to compete for Scotland alongside men in a national soccer competition when she took part in the European Transplant Football Championship in Oxford. Kidney disease is the 10th biggest cause of death worldwide with 500 people in Scotland waiting for a kidney transplant at any time.
