Daniel James has opened up about his fruitful relationship with Leeds United manager Daniel Farke, attributing it to one of the most stable periods in his career. As a pivotal player for Farke, James has been a regular on the pitch, starting 55 out of 72 Championship games he's been fit for.
The winger has maintained his place in the starting line-up for 14 consecutive league games, avoiding injuries and maintaining impressive form. His season statistics currently boast 10 goals and nine assists.
This performance has made him the first Welsh player to hit double figures in goals for Leeds in consecutive seasons since the legendary John Charles did so nearly seven decades ago. "It's always an honour to be put in a category like that," James remarked upon hearing of his achievement, reports Leeds Live.
"I think I'm a long way off being put in the same bracket as him. Unbelievable career, what a player, legend of the game. But things like that I try and not get too high off.
"Going back to Leeds, we've got eight important games left. We're still at a stage where we haven't done it yet. The confidence I take from club football into international football is so important."
James shared these insights during a press conference before Wales' upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and North Macedonia. Heading into the international break, the forward feels he's carrying strong momentum.
"I think it's probably the most consistent we've played in quite a few seasons, which always helps," said the 27-year-old player. "If you go back to last season, I had some good periods but got injured at some not great times. It was kind of stop-start.
"Whereas since November, I've been fit and that consistency of playing and the backing of the manager and the players... I try to go into every game believing that I'm going to try and get a goal and assist.
"Trying to give everything for the team. But if I'm not doing that, first and foremost it's about working hard. I'm really enjoying it at the minute."
The player expressed his gratitude towards Farke and the impact he has had on him at Elland Road. He explained how Farke's system at United has been instrumental in helping him perform at his best.
"When he [Farke] first came in, he put his arm around me and said what he wanted from me," he added. "I think we had a good relationship from the start.
"It's one I've tried to continue over the last few years, to listen to him. The way he sets up the team suits me down to the ground. That's when I get the benefits from it."
