The boxing world is mourning the loss of heavyweight icon George Foreman, who has passed away at the age of 76. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Foreman's family expressed their deep sorrow: "Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose." They continued to honour his legacy, stating: "A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two time heavyweight champion of the world, He was deeply respected - a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name - for his family." The family concluded with gratitude and a request for privacy: "We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers, and kindly ask for privacy as we honour the extraordinary life of a man we were blessed to call our own." Foreman's illustrious career included a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Summer Olympics, followed by turning professional in 1969. He famously claimed the heavyweight title with a stunning second-round knockout victory over the then-undefeated Joe Frazier in 1973, reports the Mirror US . Foreman eventually dropped the WBA belt when he refused a mandatory title defence, and after defending his IBF title against Alex Schulz, the American relinquished the belt. At 46 years and 169 days old, Forman became the oldest world heavyweight champion in history. Foreman remains the oldest fighter to ever win the world heavyweight title and the second-oldest in any weight class, behind Bernard Hopkins at light heavyweight. Aged 48 with a record of 76 wins - 68 via knockout - and five losses, Foreman called time on his illustrious career in 1997.
