In a rain-soaked Dublin, Leinster clinched their first United Rugby Championship (URC) title in four years, overpowering the Bulls with a commanding 19 points in the first 23 minutes.
The match, briefly brightened by the Beach Boys’ Good Vibrations in tribute to Brian Wilson, reflected the electric mood of Leinster’s supporters at the Aviva Stadium, where over 46 thousand fans watched the home side dominate.
Leinster’s victory was built on a ferocious collective effort, particularly in the back row, where Jack Conan and Josh van der Flier scored two of the three first-half tries. Ryan Baird’s consistent 80-minute performance solidified their dominance. The forwards, led by Thomas Clarkson and Andrew Porter, set the tone at the scrum, dismantling the Bulls’ anticipated strength in that phase. Leinster’s aggression in the collision zone overwhelmed the Bulls’ predictable narrow attacks, with even fly-half Sam Prendergast throwing himself into tackles and rallying his forwards after key defensive stands.
The Bulls’ back three, including Willie le Roux, struggled to make any real impact, with le Roux facing jeers from the crowd after miscues. Leinster’s aerial superiority and relentless line speed further quelled the visitors.
One pivotal moment came early when Johan Goosen fumbled a grubber from Jordie Barrett, leading to a scrum where Clarkson’s nudge earned Leinster a crucial penalty. Conan’s try followed, made possible by Dan Sheehan’s break and Tommy O’Brien’s devastating clean-out. Prendergast’s conversion from a tough angle settled nerves, while his tackle on Marco van Staden showcased Leinster meant business.
Leinster’s subtlety matched their physicality. Barrett exploited space with a chip from Luke McGrath, who filled in admirably for Jamison Gibson-Park. Barrett’s perfectly timed kick over the tryline made it 14-0 after 14 minutes. The Bulls’ errors compounded their woes with Harold Vorster’s penalty, Grobbelaar’s crooked lineout, and a wayward offload from David Kriel, all forced by Leinster’s suffocating pressure. A third try came from Conan’s barnstorming run, supported by O’Brien, with Van der Flier crashing through a maul to score.
Prendergast’s 50:22 kick and a post-halftime penalty extended the lead to 22-0, though a sloppy phase followed as Leinster overplayed from deep. Ultimately, their early dominance, scrum power, and relentless intensity guaranteed a deserved triumph, marking a significant milestone in their campaign.
