Formula One is a sport synonymous with high stakes, high speeds and even higher earnings.
F1 drivers are among the world's best-paid athletes and have therefore become known for living lives of luxury. From plush Monaco apartments to stunning car collections and boats, they are the epitome of glitz and fame.
Out of the 20 drivers gearing up for the new 2025 season, which gets underway this weekend with the Australian Grand Prix, several earn extremely high salaries, bolstered by personal sponsorships and a variety of business interests.
So buckle up as we now take a look at the reported net worth of the six wealthiest F1 stars.
Joint 4, 5, 6: Carlos Sainz, Lance Stroll, Charles Leclerc – £38.6m
Three F1 drivers share the same net worth, placing them in joint-fourth place. Carlos Sainz, an F1 driver since 2015, was one of the top earners with Ferrari in 2024 before his switch to Williams this season.
Lance Stroll, who stands to inherit a billion-dollar fortune from his father and Aston Martin owner Lawrence, has amassed around £39m from his F1 career and sponsorships alone.
Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, has been one of the grid's highest earners for years, reportedly raking in £20.8m at Ferrari last year. His growing collection of cars and star power off the track indicate that the Monegasque will continue to climb this list in the future.
3: Max Verstappen – £167.5m
Despite reigning supreme in the driver's championship for four consecutive years, Red Bull's Max Verstappen has to settle for third place on the podium for the wealthiest F1 drivers. Forbes named him as the highest-earning driver on the grid for both 2023 and 2024, pulling in a reported £57.9m last year, including bonuses.
The Dutchman was the youngest person featured on the Quote 500 – a ranking of the top 500 people in the Netherlands. His substantial net worth landed him 322nd place on the list back in October 2024.
Verstappen continues to expand his fortune through endorsements and more creative methods, such as planning to establish his own GT Team –Verstappen.com Racing – in 2025. He also holds a stake in the prominent sim racing team, Team Redline, for which he competes online.
2: Fernando Alonso – £185.3m
Coming in at number two is two-time world champion Fernando Alonso. As the oldest driver on the grid, the Spaniard has had almost a quarter of a century to amass his staggering wealth.
The 43-year-old is reportedly earning around £15.4m each year at Aston Martin, with his contract set to run until 2026. He's had a host of big-name sponsors over the years, including Adidas, Santander and ING, as well as the fashion brand he once owned, Chiefly Kimoa.
Away from F1, Alonso's ventures include funding and opening the Fernando Alonso Sports Complex in his home region of Asturias, Spain, which houses both a museum dedicated to his career and a karting circuit for budding young drivers. He also established A14 Management, a driver agency that counts Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto among its talents.
1: Lewis Hamilton – £335m
From the adrenaline-fuelled world of F1 to the glamour of Hollywood, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has firmly established himself as a global icon. The Englishman, 40, is not only a speed demon on the track but a titan of wealth and fame, overtaking David Beckham as the wealthiest British sportsperson of all time in 2020.
The lion's share of his wealth comes from his record-breaking racing career, with reports suggesting he enjoyed a hefty £43m base salary last year at Mercedes. His earnings have skyrocketed even further since joining Ferrari this year, where he's being paid around £50m annually.
Away from racing, Hamilton is a marketing powerhouse, collaborating with global brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Puma, IWC Schaffhausen and Monster Energy Drinks. He’s also ventured into fashion, music, and even environmental activism. Investments in technology, real estate, and a plant-based burger chain further diversify his portfolio, solidifying his status as a multifaceted mogul.
