Rupeni Caucaunibuca Junior has signed up with French Top 14 club Montpellier HR’s academy.
This was reported by French newspaper Midi Olympique.
The 17-year-old is the son and namesake of former Flying Fijian star back Rupeni Caucanubuca (Snr), who was regarded as the world’s best winger at the height of his career.
Caucaunibuca (Snr) had left his mark in the Top 14 competition having played for Agen and Stade Toulousain where he scored 65 tries from 108 appearances. He also starred for Blues when they won the Super Rugby ti-tle in 2003.
Now retired, his son and namesake Caucaun-ibuca Junior has showed his interest to play in the Top 14 by signing up with Montpellier.
Recently while running for Naitasiri Second-ary School (NSS), he clocked 11.02 seconds in the 100 metres of the recent Fiji Finals.
The report also indicated that the Blues along with Clermont, Montpellier and Toulouse were after the youngster to be part of their academy.
According to Midi Olympique, talks with Montpellier had been fruitful and has signed with the club.
In an interview with SUNsports in April, Caucaunibuca Junior said: “I will try my best to reach where he (dad) left off or even better and revive his name on the rugby field.”
He also revealed that his dad had been having conversations with his former clubs Blues and a couple of French clubs he had played for.
“These clubs want to have me over. Blues wants me to join their acad-emy and continue my studies in New Zealand,” he added.
Caucaunibuca Jnr was scouted by Naitasiri teacher and coach, Rusiate Talebulamai who’s in the same prayer group with his mother.
“He came to Bua for a prayer meeting, saw me and asked my parents if I could come and attend NSS to play rugby and rugby league.
“I only trained for rugby league but not athletics. I was surprised to have won the 100m race during the Triple N Zone,” he added.
